An Open Letter to MOTU

Post by mike_o »

I would like to make a few requests and voice a gripe, so here we go.

I recently purchased the DP6 upgrade with the MX4 V2 for $99, this was and is a great deal. but I have a problem with the implementation and availability of my VI use.

one of the most hyped and anticipated features of DP6 was the plugin manager which would allow you to pick and choose which plugins to load.

But there is a flaw, when you have a MAS and an AU versions of the same plugin, it willl skip the AU version and only allow you to use the MAS version, even when you go into the plugin editor and try to tell it to load the AU instead of the MAS it will not.

Even when I removed MX4 completely and reinstalled only the AU version, it was still skipped by DP6 as a "Duplicate".

For myself personally this is a big deal as I am a dedicated automap user.
The MX4 is my favorite synth and I absolutely love it, but here are my real gripes.

1.MX4 can be controlled through NRPN #'s but they are very jumpy and erratic on about half the controls
2.on the wavetable selection commands each # step from 0 to 1, to 2, to 3 will select waveforms # 1,3,5,7 etc... you cannot select all wavetables from NRPN #'s
3.NRPN #'s by nature are a hassle to program.

4. when using the AU version under automap in Live I can set any resolution I want instanlty assign multiple controls to the same parameter and have them reflect each others changes.

as in one knob is set to step through pitch in even semitones, another knob is set to step in sets of 10 cents, and another knob is set to sweep through the pitch range at a resolution of 5000/1, thats real deep control for sound design and heavy synth work, which I do alot of.

It's just a really bad workflow stopping limitation.

I mean really, How can I not use the version of YOUR product I want, within YOUR other product. even when there's a plugin manager that was designed specifically to let me choose what plugins to load?

This is such a frustrating limitation for me right now,

please post in this thread to support MOTU changing the plugin system to allow use of AU's, even when a MAS version is present, there are some other problems caused by this limitation as well but I have a lot to d right now.

Good news: You CAN make AU versions of MOTU software run in DP6. I know... I've done it with MachFive2.

Bad news: I'm too lazy to figure out how I did it... someone else might have to help you.

I'd guess that you need to make sure that the MAS version is removed and then that the AU is in the correctly location. Then I'd delete the AU information cache file so that DP6 rescans all the AUs when you start up and I'd think that might do the trick.

If this works I will straight up call you "SENSIE" JAMES STEEL "THE REAL DP DEAL", all loud and everything just like that, I'm doing some cloning and backup stuff right now but I will give it a go when I'm done, thanks.

I actually think I tried that before but it was in DP5, I installed the MX4 about a month before DP6 while I was finishing some projects, I don't think I've tried that in 6 yet we'll see.

Hmmm... I just know I did it with MachFive. I think actually with MachFive if you run it as an AU you can actually get it to print audio during bounce to disk without having to print the track first. The MAS version needs to be updated to have this capability. Hopefully that's coming soon. :D

You've made sure it doesn't appear in the plug-in menu at all either? Even though it says "Duplicate?"

By the way... just wondering but have you installed the 6.02 update to DP and checked to see if you still have the problem with the MAS version of MX4 that made you want to use AU?

yes I installed to a cloned drive and am testing everything out, the MX4 issue is still the same, I had also sent a techlink to motu a while back about the fact that NRPN#'s below 15 do not work on any of their MAS plugins, neither the DP bundled ones nor the MX4V2.2, this was 2-3 months ago. they messaged me back saying they had reproduced the issue and it would be corrected in a forthcoming update. I was really hoping this would be that update.

moto needs to just give us the ability to use THEIR AU plugs in THEIR system, it's just kinda nonsense not to be able to.

+1 And for NI and other (now orphaned) plugs as well. It would seem this is something of a hurdle for them, but they are getting a lot right in the current release, so clearly that are working and continuing to support DP. :D

oh yeah, the update is really nice actually, aside from the previously posted issue here and another one I posted in another thread about a new glitch that developed in one of my main plugins.

the new update has really improved the, well, snappiness of dp for me. seriously it has.

Exactly what I said, except for plugins the update is great, IMO. The plugin problem is a big deal, but I guess I'm just thrilled with the fact that there's not too much else to complain about - at least from what I am reading. Cold comfort, I know - but it could be far worse.

Did you check both library/plugins folders to see if the MAS plugs are deleted (the user and the computer libraries)?
