Question about strings

Post by wonder »

Hey guys,
Im tracking a song (pop) and using EWQL strings.
What i want is a stabbing effect with the high violins (like a short marcato or spiz) but the the strings pull down in pitch.
Like a horn stab that FALLS OFF but i want it with strings.

The best way i can describe it is...if you listen to Jamiroquai and they do strings...they have a few stabs in their tunes and thats the effect i want.

anyhelp?

Wonder:

I just bought EWQLSO a few days ago, but a couple of things come to mind...

1. A quick Pitch Bend down. EWQLSO seems to default to 1 whole step, and I don't yet know how to change that parameter to like a full octave pitch bend.

2. Experiment with the "glide" setting. Play the note you want to fall from, then one a 4th lower or so.

Again, I'm new at this with EWQLSO, but maybe this will at least serve as a starting point!

Short of using the pich bend wheel (which would probably sound cheesy) I would try doing some kind of chromatic fall in something like 11 against 8 for example. It's easy to get it perfect in Step Record.

Will try those...i'm looking for a hard stab and fall though.

Also, anyone know how to get a BIG GLISSANDO? Like a swell into a key change? Not a SLIDE but a gliss where its real dramatic and ends up on a HIGHHH note?
I can do it wil LIVE strings but trying to get the hang of EastWest

I think you're talking about the wondeful disco string sound...I would agree that pitch bend is the way to go but experiment drawing in curves in the graphic editor until you get the sound you want rather than trying to use the pitch wheel. Maybe layer a marcato type stg sound with a sustain that pitch bends down.

yes, it can do microtuning.

Disco effect is EXACTLY what i want! good call.

I tried the mod wheel...not REALLY what i'm looking for.

I'm not TOO savvy with MIDI and MIDI editing so you'll have to spell out what you're suggesting.

Wonder,
Do you own Reason? The orkester library that comes with Reason has exactly what your looking for (Gliss and Stab with a fall off). If you'd like, send me a PM and I'll record a stem for you. Just let me know what key, and tempo.

The old Virtuoso Strings library has a couple really good samples of exactly what you're talking about. I can't imagine the new East West library wouldn't have one as well. It's gotta labeled as either a glissando or slide down. The reason a MIDI pitch bend down won't sound good is because no two players are moving at the exact same speed. Also, if there is any ambience in the sample (the only kind I really like to use), it sounds weird to bend.

Oh, and EVERY string library I've ever used has glissandos or runs of varying lengths and speeds going up into sustained notes. Sounds like you need to break out the documentation that came with the library and do some readin!!!!

EWQLSO has some glissandos up in various forms but nothing going down.

I think the Pro edition will have runs as well. But I doubt they will include falls.
