Can I use MOTU 828 MKII Stand Alone w/ Adat?

Post by Entrainer »

Hello Everyone!

I'm looking for a bit of help regarding the MOTU 828mkii. I'm interested in using the device as an 8 channel A/D convertor. Ideally the Adat in will feed the analog outs, and the analog ins will feed the Adat out. The ADAT will be connected to my Eventide H8000FW. I wouldn't be connecting the Motu 828mkii to the computer via Firewire, as the H8000FW will be firewire connection.

1. Is this possible?

2. Can this be configured without software?

3. Can this be configured and saved with software, allowing me to disconnect the 828?

thanks much!

The 828mkII features four onboard stereo mix buses. So you could do eight channels of A/D conversion or eight channels of D/A conversion, but not both at the same time. You can configure the routing on the front panel without a computer, but it will be easier to connect the interface to the computer and set the routing with the CueMix FX software. Those settings are retained when you disconnect the 828mkII from the computer, and they can be saved to a preset on the interface itself or a configuration file stored on the computer.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Thanks! I got it going. To bad about the busses being limited.

Ok... I have spent the entire day wrestling with this Motu 828mkii. The Cue Mix and drivers worked, but I initially set the pan settings a little off.

When I plugged back in, the drivers would not work (XPsp3). Cue Mix said that no Motu is present.

I did the whole uninstall, reinstall, clean registry... finally I got some drivers that worked. Thanks to the kind user on this forum who posted them a while back.

NOW... 8 hours later:

Cuemix is acting crazy. I resets settings every 2 seconds and responds real slow. Very frustrating. All I want to do is assign the busses to outputs and do a mix. I don't need the firewire to even work. I just need to edit the ins-outs and busses. I figured out how to set levels and switch mix-bus settings by the front panel.

Does anyone know how to set the Mix Bus outputs from the front panel?

I must say that MOTU is seriously screwy. Both current "on-site" versions of Cuemix don't work. Cuemix resets on PC, outputs can't be changed on the Mac. I doubt they can blame a computer related issue this time. This is defiantly a software issue. It's something I'd expect from a beta version or freeware, but not an established hardware manufacturer.

I had to use an old mac and track down a old version of cuemix to make it finally work.

There's a reason why companies place a value on high-quality customer service and working products. During economic booms, like the 90s, maybe you can make it with their current attitude and business model. However, in a recession and possible depression, every dollar will count.
