What a nightmare! I only just read this thread so forgive me for not seeing it sooner. You probably didn't need to reinstall Leopard entirely if only AMS was misbehaving. Surely there "should be" a way to install just that component or some portion of the OS that deals with just Core services. I haven't checked Leopard on this, but old OS and/or software version would allow at least some selective installs. One thing I would have tried (and this may be useful in the future if you or others have similar problems) is to replace the AMS application. It sounds to me like the AMS app (not just a plist) got corrupted. You should be able to install just that or even copy it from another machine as long as the OS version matches. It seems like a lot of trouble to archive and install if all you really needed was 14MB app.scooter wrote:The install and archive did not fix the problem.
It took a full re-install of Leopard to fix the problem. It's fine now and only God knows what was going on with my AMS.

Of course, that might not have fixed it at all, but from what I've read (and assuming you want to eventually figure this out if it happens again) that would be my first line of defenses after the usual suspects are rounded up (plist, drivers, AMS setup rebuild, etc.) I mean, what else is there? I guess the OS itself could have been corrupted and in that case a reinstall is called for if replacing the app didn't work.
Also, consider Time Machine in an instance like this. It is exactly this kind of scenario that Time Machine has saved me from disaster a couple of times. Replacing an app or plist is a mouse click away - as long as you have TM archive your apps. I do.
Anyway, the horses are back in the stable, so close the barn doors. And get that Time Machine software moving archives to a solid backup drive!
