UltraLite / CueMix Direct Monitoring Question

Post by stateofemergency »

Hello all, this is my first post on the board.

I own both a 828 mk3 and an UltraLite. I use Logic Pro as my DAW. Can anyone help me with setting up direct monitoring situation for vocals? I;m going to just have one mic in and I want the singer to be able to hear themselves not through the software, but the interface. How is this accomplished? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Install Cuemix. Record arm your track with the input you want from the interface. I'm not entirely sure how Logic works interface wise. But mute the channel you are going to record. In cuemix make the input unmuted and set it for whatever volume you want. Monitor through whatever output I.e mains etc.

The manual for either unit should be somewhat helpful.

worth saying, if it's just vocals you should be ok just to monitor from Logic.

Thanks! I'm curious, when do you find it necessary to use direct monitoring? What situations?

I use it all the time. I usually have too much going on to have super low buffers. In general I'd say when your buffers are over 128 or 256 many people will kick in and use direct monitoring. I think this is especially true on acoustic instruments. If you are doing MIDI stuff you can always quantize.

I use like the feeling that I'm hearing a click and then playing 256 samples behind it - it's probably more my mild OCD than it is an actual problem for accuracy!

Once you get a fair bit going on, and the machine as more to cope with, you will hear a noticable delay in the monitoring. It will be quick and close to zero, but not. That's the point at which you need to.

It's one of those "before you ask, listen!" types of things...
