Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

recording on external hard drives

Post by japaneseapartment »

I am planning to buy an external hard disj (7200 rpm, cache 16mb, firewire and usb).
would I get better performances if I record directly on it rather than on the internal hard disk of my imac?
I use DP 6.01 with a motu ultralite. in this set up, is it better to connect the external drive directly to the ultralite via firewire (second in chain) or to the other firewire bus on my imac?
thanks for your help...

Depending on what is your computer, I would leave the FW Bus for the Ultralite and go esata for another external Disk. It's better to leave everything separated to prevent any bottlenecks. Of course the first rule DON'T USE YOUR SYSTEM DRIVE FOR AUDIO HARD DRIVE.
