8Pre - New guy with a few questions

Post by CQ7String »

Hi folks!

Just signed up hoping to get a little insight. I've been RTFM-ing for the last few days and have a question regarding the 8Pre. I'm running it into Sonar, and the way I have it cabled is this:

1: Direct acoustic
2: nothing
3: Condenser
4: nothing
5: nothing
6: Left out from PodXT Pro
7: nothing
8: Right out from PodXT Pro

I get audio just fine in Sonar, and in CueMix all of my channels are set as mono and panned center (eg, no stereo pairs). For some reason however, whenever I actually plug something into an input, say for example I plug the L/R from the PodXT into channels 7&8, whatever I'm plugged into disappears as an input option in Sonar, and the only options available as Sonar inputs are channels that I don't have anything plugged into.

For example right now, channel 1 has a direct in from an acoustic guitar, and channel 2 has a condenser mic, but they aren't available in Sonar unless I unplug them:

If I make everythin stereo in CueMix it's the same thing.

How do I go about just getting 8 channels into Sonar, and why is this happening? I'm pouring over the setup guide and manual (and I am very new to all of this) but I don't see anything definitive that I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance!

A bit more clarity - here's CueMix with the PodXT in channel 7 and 8.

Both channels auto-pan L/R when I make them mono. In Sonar, my only input option is Stereo in Ch7 from the motu - there's no option for 7&8, and what I'd like to do is have the left side of my Pod on one track and the right channel on the other, but for some reason I can't select channel 8 in this setup, it's just not there.

well, I'll give it a shot. a couple of qualifiers in advance - I moved to the 828MKii a year or two ago, so my direct work with the 8pre is dated, and my version of Cue Mix is the older one. I am a Sonar user (studio 6) and use the MOTU ASIO drivers.

Thoughts -

my version of cue mix doesn't delineate between mono or stereo, that is set up in Sonar through the recording input selection. to get a stereo recording of the pod xt I would put the L and R outputs into tracks 7 and 8, respectively, and then in Sonar select the "MOTU ASIO stereo analog 7" as the input on the track. this would put channel seven in the L side of the track and 8 in the right side. cue mix (my version) doesn't care what kind of signal is in the input - it's the selection of the stereo input in sonar that makes the difference.

does the pod xt you are using have a stereo out? i would guess that if you could run a stereo out into cue mix and only use one channel, that you designate in cue mix as stereo. you could also try using an insert cable that would take the L and R outs and combine into a single TRS jack that would go into only one channel, that you would designate as stereo. with my set up, if I'm putting a stereo signal into a single track, I would simply put into into a single channel, say channel 8 on on the 8pre, selecting "MOTU ASIO analog 7 R" and then when I play it back I would make sure the track in Sonar is designated as stereo.

as for why inputs don't show up in tracks, my best guess is based on the way Sonar treats busses and sends. if you already have selected an input for use, when you add a track any inputs in use won't show up as available. this is not the case in my version of Sonar, as I can send the same input to multiple tracks if I want. I'll ponder further to see if I come up with anything.

good luck. hope this helps.

Hey new guy,

Welcome to the forum. I have a friend who had a similar problem. We tried everything until we tried changing from ASIO to WDM drivers. That fixed that problem. Now he can use any channel and input it anywhere he wants for a selected output. Apparently ASIO deals with stereo inputs only, therefore why input a second channel for the right (or some silly reasoning). You might try that and see if it works for you.
