Hi all,
I see a few others with the firewire drivers for V64 have had problems with the MIDI - presumably exactly the same as I've got, with random notes every now and then, and some notes actually played that are sustained after release. Extremely frustrating!! I'm using a firewire 828mkII.
I've just installed (or tried to install) the latest fw driver - 3.6.8.1360 - and get problems here too. I get an "error 1721" - "problem with this installer package". After opening up the 828 hw setup console, I see that it *seems* to have updated correctly, despite the installer error message. However, the first time I turn on the device, it doesn't come up with the usual spiele about detecting the various "devices" of the 828mkII.
So:
1) Has anyone seen the same error as me with the installer for x64? I've got the necessary rights, etc, blah blah blah so I hope it's not a user problem, and am fairly confident it's not.
2) I was hoping .1360 would sort out my woes with MIDI. Has anyone experienced the same problems as me as well as gotten them fixed, and any tips for me on sorting it out?
3) My last resort would be to revert to 32 bit Vista - although I really don't want to. Has everyone managed okay with the drivers for Vista 32?
Cheers,
Brian

Re: 828mkII Vista64 MIDI Problem
Try right-clicking on the installer program and choosing "Run as administrator."
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.
Re: 828mkII Vista64 MIDI Problem
As I mentioned, already did run it as administrator but thanks... I've just tried turning user account control off completely and that sorts the installer problem out for me thankfully. But it still doesn't sort out MIDI problems....

Re: 828mkII Vista64 MIDI Problem
Has *ANYONE* managed to get their MIDI working with x64 on Vista?
It seems like so many people have just had problems with no resolution whatsoever... Quite sad really.
so let's sum up my experience with MOTU so far:
Symponic Instrument: bad samples, the usual gripes, etc, but at least it was cheap compared to something like Vienna so I won't complain too much.
828 mkII:
1) LCD Backlight stops working just outside of warranty.
2) I can't run the unit on 96 kHz because it just loses sync and dies after a while, so I lower the sampling rate to 88.2 kHz.
3) The abovementioned MIDI problems with Vista 64 driver which other people are also seemingly pulling their hair out over.
My next MOTU product I purchase: There won't ever be one... sorry for MOTU

Re: 828mkII Vista64 MIDI Problem
My 828 MKII works fabulously on my PC with XP Pro SP3. However, I recently partitioned the boot drive and bought Vista Ultimate x64 and put it on this same computer. Everything still works great when I boot into XP Pro SP3, but when I boot into Vista x64, I get the same MIDI problems reported here. I've tried everything I can think of, but still get problems when trying to use the MIDI port on the 828 MKII with Vista.
I also have a Novation ReMOTE 61 SL, so I tried hooking that up via USB to this computer, and the problem becomes much less severe, but still I get occasional random high pitched noises. Once again, running the exact computer in XP Pro SP3 produces excellent performance and no problems.
Bottom line: I think something with the MOTU FW USB driver isn't compatible with something in Vista. Perhaps MOTU will find a workaround by turning off something in Vista, but for now it just doesn't seem to work reliably. I've tried everything including getting rid of UAC, getting rid of Aero, turning off Firewall, and disabling my wireless network. Note that my system works most of the time if I do NOT use the MOTU MIDI input and simultaneously also disable my wireless internet. I still get occasional errors with this setup, and the errors seem to happen most when an application first starts (i.e., as if it had a mysterious warm-up time which makes no sense at all). It is frustrating because in XP SP3, I can use the MOTU MIDI interface without problems and I don't need to turn off the wireless internet.
