Stupid newbie question

Hello all,
I'm a newbie to the whole DAW thing, though I've owned DP since v. 4 when I bought my 828 MkII - but never learned how to use it. I recently bought the DP6 upgrade. I've also had an Onyx 1640 for about a year and finally got around to using it and DP6 to record my gigs this past week. It's been a lot of fun staying up into the wee hours each night, and playing with levels and plugins.

For now, I want to use the app like an old school multitrack tape deck and mixing console. Straight ahead, 10 channels of analog audio to disk, tweak to taste, done. The manual seems so concerned with MIDI, sequencing and looping though. It's utterly confusing. I couldn't care less about those things. I'm interested in bare bones to start.

I record a whole set at a time into each project file. I'd like to know how I chop up that file into individual songs while preserving the track info, plugins, etc, etc. Do you select a range, copy, open a new file and paste? That would seem like the obvious (and very Mac like approach) but it hasn't worked for me thus far.

It's not a stupid question.

In the Mini Menu of the Sequence Editor, make sure Edge Edit Copy is checked on.

Hit shift-C to open the Chunks Window.

Highlight the sequence and chose Duplicate Sequence as many times as you need to match the number of songs in your set +1. I always leave the original alone in case I have to go back to it. So if you have 8 songs you would end up with 9 sequences. Option-click to name each sequence to match the song that it's going to contain.

Open one of the new sequences by double-clicking on it or selecting it from one of the drop-down menus atop the main windows.

In the Track Overview or Sequence Editor, select and delete the audio in front and behind the song you want to keep. The selection doesn't have to be perfect, you can adjust it later if you want. If you used markers to mark where each song is it will be easier, but it doesn't take long anyway.

After you only have the audio for one song showing in that sequence, Select All and hit the left or right arrow key to only have the soundbites selected. Don't worry that the soundbites moved a little either way, they're all moving together.

Either drag or arrow the soundbites to the beginning of the sequence or use Edit > Shift. In the Shift window select the tab "To Time Or Marker" and type in where you want the beginning of the soundbites moved to (1/1/000 is the default).

Save and move on to the next sequence.

That's about it, really.

Others may have different or better or faster ways of doing it.

I record my band's live sets with DP and an 828mkII + 8Pre. New sequence for every set. Next day I drop markers at the beginning and end of each tune. Do a listen through with automation on and tweak as I go. Lather, rinse, repeat. You can then select each song by clicking on the first marker and bounce to disk or export to a new sequence. Lots of ways to do it, just whatever works best for you.

This has me intrigued and puzzled. How do you export a selection to a new sequence?

Oh, I figured it out: Project > Sequence > Copy Selection To New Sequence.

Holy mackerel, I didn't even know that was there. That's quite handy. I couldn't understand at first why I lost the Wiper, but quickly figured out the other sequence was still play enabled in the Chunks window.

You can drag and drop to the Finder, or you can drag and drop to the Chunks Window. Seems I remember there being something busted in DP6 and DnD to the Finder, but I haven't tried it in a while. I don't know if that's a fact or not. But for a long time you've been able to drag and drop to the Finder, and with a certain key command you could get a Standard MIDI File.

If you drag and drop to the Chunks Window, there must be data selected, not just track names. If you select all, it will take the tracks with data, but drop the ones that are empty. One can do an automation snapshot, or a brief automation record, to add data to an otherwise empty track so that it will be included in the drag and drop. That can be deleted later. Anyway... those are just some alternative ways of creating sequences.

You got me... I mixed up my menus and windows. You can export the bounced (and added to your soundbites in the project) audio from the soundbites window. My bad, good catch.
edit: Now you've got me questioning my ?sanity?

Wow, ten weeks early. She's in a hurry to get going. She's a tiny little thing. 15 inches!!! That's the width of the powerbook I'm typing on. Unbelievable!!! The heart melts for those little ones.

Glad to hear she'll be going home soon. I pray she'll be healthy.

Congrats to you and your family, Pappy! Isn't life a joy when things work out? I'm so glad she's healthy. That's awfully early, but my wife (a nurse) tells stories about babies making it even at 6 months. I don't know how they do it. I'll bet those grow up to be fighters!

Well, if she's anything like her Mom and Dad she will be a fighter. Those two snipe back and forth all the time. But they seem to be really happy. 'Specially since Sydney got here! Yeah, my wife's a nurse too. 15 years in OB. It's nice having someone who knows what's going on. OF course, my daughter now works at the hospital where my wife used to work, but she's in charge of scheduling the all the nurses in the hospital. So needless to say, when she went into labor the place practically shut down!
