i guess it depends on what type of PC you are using. i got my 828 MK3 working fine under SP2 (without any FW drivers downgrade) using an HP Slimline and an AGERE chipset, and the same unit is pure crap on 3 other machines (2 of them have a TI chipset) on XP SP1 and SP2

SP2 and beyond is required for multi-core. This may require a roll back of XP's Firewire drivers back to SP1 though.

What about with a Sonnet Firewire card, it says XP SP2 on the box.

I'm skeptical because the hardware itself is limited by the drivers that control them. My Lacie FW 800 card was reduced to a hunk of crap with the SP2 FW drivers that come with SP2.

I just built a new machine and thought I would give windows XP SP3 a try and have had no problems. It's been about 3 months now and all is working well. My 828mk3 is working great through an ADS PYRO PCI 64 card. I also used this combo on my old setup which had SP2 and had no issues but I did have the Windows firewire patch installed(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222/en-us )which fixed the firewire problem some people experience with SP2. But with SP3 there is no need for this patch as its been implemented.

I wouldn't thought install SP3 over an old installation of SP2 as I have heard of people having problems. Install XP SP1 or SP2 and then install SP3 before any other programs or drivers are installed for best results.

Basically only us firewire cards with TI chipsets which the Sonnets cards have.

that may be well and all. I too had no problems before I got a second FW unit. Now I'm rolled back to SP1 for the FW divers to get anything working together. I would say update to sp2/3 because of all the security updates but if you have two or more units plan on rolling back the FW drivers to sp1
