About copying volume automation on 5.13 and little about 6

Post by eukka »

Hi!

I have an issue that i haven't able to resolve. The users guide doesn't help either. While i'm copying volume automation data from track to another, the MIDI notes or audio from the selected range will also be copyed... I can't figure it out why it does that. It's annoying. I'm using DP 5.13 ...

...Which leads to my another, minor quaestion. Is DP 6 good? Is it more stable than 5.13? Because 5.13 with Digidesign MBox 2 & Mac Os X 10.5.1 isn't so stable than DP 5.13 with Digidesign 002r or RME HDSPe Raydat on MacOs X 10.4.9. And there has been some crashes in 10.4.9 too with RME Raydat. I'm currently in studio, mixing upcoming cd for Anssi Tikanmäki Orchestra. And today was the first time of past five mixing days when DP crashed two times. But comments are welcome!

Hey!

Do you copy automation using [copy] and [paste] commands?
Try [merge] instead of paste, unlike in ProToos, in DP [copy] works on all the selection, not just it's visible part.

If you use the Cursor tool to select a range, in the copy you'll get whatever is totally selected or covered--volume, soundbites, MIDI notes. If you use the Arrow/Lasso tool, you can keep it from totally selecting soundbites easy enough just by not covering them completely height-wise.

You can double click on any of the volume points and the entire volume curve for that track will be selected, and only the volume curve.

You can hide things by using the view filter, but I always found that to be a pain and see no need to do that unless i"m working on a lot of volume stuff, or whatever.

Learn the letters that correspond and activate each tool and it will make your work much easier.

Let me count the ways... (in addition to Wurliuchi's methods)

(each number represents a different method, not a step-by-step)
1) When you do not want something to be copied, use QuickFilters to make all but the ones you want invisible. Then you will only copy what you select. To use QuickFilter, select one of each type of object you want to remain visible, then click the QuickFilter box. It's at the top of the window in all versions of DP prior to 6. Since version 6, it's been at the bottom of the window, which makes it much easier to reach when selecting data. Do not use "Select All" (COMMAND-A) with QuickFilter, as it selects all the hidden ones, too.

2) Another way to do this is to draw a data range with the cursor (draw a box around the data you want). Once you have your selection, hold down the SHIFT key, while dragging over the notes in the upper (notes) portion of the window. This will DE-SELECT all the notes over which you drag the 2nd time.

3) A THIRD way to do this is to use "Lines" display mode for your continuous data. Velocity tics are not visible among the CC and automation data in Lines mode. The Lines mode menu (as opposed to Bars or Points) is located in the bottom-left of the MIDI Edit window.

4) For some purposes, the Search feature (Edit menu/New Search) can make this an instantaneous thing. Set up the search one time and save it. Then every time you need it, just go to it in the menu and BAM, your stuff is selected.

5) Yet another way, and probably least desirable, is to uncheck Velocity (Note On) markers from the View Filter.

So, pick the method that works best for you. You'll find that in Digital Performer there are quite often more than one way to do things.

PS: DP6.01 is fine if you've got Intel. If you have a PPC Mac (G5, G4, or prior), certain plugins may not function properly in Leopard OS, even with the available updates. If you use PPC and 10.4.11, you should be fine with DP6. In any case, don't switch in the middle of a project. Give yourself some time to learn DP6. It feels like a new application at first, but as soon as you learn the interface, you'll be back up to speed.

I just discovered another way for audio:

Hold down command and lasso the automation.

Then go to Edit/copy to clipping window.

Now you can drop this automation clipping to any track you like.
