Anyone using a SSD harddrive for audio???

Post by Radiogal »

Solid-state drive (SSD harddrives) With no moving parts, solid-state drives are inherently less fragile than hard disks and therefore also silent (unless a cooling fan is used); as there are no mechanical delays, they usually enjoy low access time and latency.
They can be installed as SATA drives on any computer.

Quick access and no moving parts, shockproof etc should make these perfect and reliable discs for audio.
Still very expensive but prices are coming down...
Is anyone using them?
I´m thinking of buying a small one (64 MB) for trial with DP...

Great question, RG. I've often wondered this myself and posed a question here about a year ago on this. I've not heard any audio-recording reports yet, and certainly not where DP is concerned.

I'm eager to hear any news along these lines too...

MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O

SSD drive might not be an optimal choice because of the limit of write on the drive.

There are sizes like 4-8-16-32-64-128 Gb. I think a 128 GB might be enough for a project working disc..
Still -the expenses.. but if it´s so quick on search, and reliable it could be worth it... that´s why I´m asking here if anybody uses them.

A relative of mine is using a SSD disc in a PC setup that he built in his car (BMW). He mentioned that the choice of SSD brand is very important.- the quality differs quite a lot between them. Samsung, he said, is one of the best brands for SSD.

Are you talking about space or speed, Dwet? Please expand for us if you don't mind, mate.

I'm saying that the number of write cycles to any block of flash is limited - and once you've used up your quota for that block - that's it! The disk can become unreliable.

Gee, thank you Dwet. I know nothing about these things, and was just curious.

Perhaps, as the technology develops, we'll see an end to this limitation, eh?

SSD drive is a good choice for the bootable system ( the SSD intel X25 is the best choice) but for recording, is better to make a Raid 0 system with two Samsung 1 terabytes Spinpoint for example, it will be my choice.
