Are MOTU going the same way as M-Audio with PCI gear?

Post by billruys »

Just wondering if PCIX/PCIe is being dropped by MOTU. This is what happened with M-Audio and drove me to MOTU a year or two ago. All the signs are there:
  • No new PCI-424 based products in years
  • No new PCI-424 drivers in almost two years
  • Lots of new F/W products
  • Regular F/W & USB driver updates
If so, this bumms me out. Seems my decision to go PCIe was a bad one after all.

Dang. I hadn't tried looking at it this way, billruys.

I've always thought of MOTU's PCI-based systems as the more stable, higher-throughput and professional options.

Mac 2012 12C Cheese Grater, OSX 10.13.6
MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O
Novation, Yamaha & Roland Synths, Guitar & Bass, Kemper Rack

Me too, but PCI, PCIX, PCIe audio interfaces seem to be going the way of the dinosaur. I still believe that PCI/X/e interfaces give far less problems (just look how many of the problems on this forum are FireWire). What annoys me is that I may, once again, be left with a heap of hardware that has its support pulled. Man I am getting sick of this (my woes started back with the Gadget Labs Wave 8*24).

I'm sick of it too, Bill.

After all, I've spent many years now trying to get my system together and working properly due to the industry's constant moving of the goal posts in combination with a paltry budget. IMHO, when one finds one's self in tough times financially, it's difficult not to be more or less universally sceptical of new standards, software and VIs, hence my resolute stance against "polluting" my system with the aforementioned hollow promises and vapourware.

Literally sick of it.
