motufwa.sys crashes Vista???

Post by lando8872 »

Any help here guys? I love my Motu 8 pre, sounds great, good latencies (down to 2ms no cracks)Nuendo 3.2 and I really don't have any issues. I'm using Vista Enterprise 32bit, Q6700 quadcore core 2, 4 gigs, 3 raptors raid0 for OS, 2 500g caviars raid0 for samples. This system rides like a beast. But occasionally the system will Bluescreen while I'm doing something like " watching a movie in iTunes".

Motufwa.sys

I am a very advanced user. I'm also a network engineer and professional musician. I have everything tweaked. Believe me, my Vista install is as fast and light as any XP install.

But this is the strangest problem and not much on the web about it. I've also tried Server 2008 as a workstation and it is even faster than Vista and more solid than XP, but same issue with the blue screening caused by the Motu driver.

Any ideas? Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks
Lando

tweak´d a bit too much have we :D. Anyway there can be a lot of issues such as: overclocking, other drivers, Irq sharing, onboard audio, ti chipset, heat, buffersize etc etc. I personally would try a clean install of Vista +Motu latest drivers+chipset drivers (jmicron, intel, nvidia). then slowly add apps / drivers as you go.Then you will pinpoint this problem of yours.
note: the 64 bit version of vista/xp works much better IMHO( 3.xx version of any Steinberg will not run on 64bit. you will need a 4.5.x licence for that)

jmicron?intel?

Thanks for the reply Reeper,
yes all intel, motherboard and Quadcore. And actually did do a clean install last night and downloaded the latest Firewire driver that they just released. So gonna give that a shot. And that is a good idea, do one app at a time and test. I mostly use Nuendo 3.2 and all the East West Plug ins because I go for the orchestral thing these days. And yes, all 32bit.
Heat may very well be an issue, as you know the Raptors generate more heat than their slower 72,000rmp counter parts. And more noise as well. I also have a dedicated AMC3ware true hard ware raid card installed. Which doesn't seem to be an issue ever but you never know. I'm hoping to not have to go into dump files and start looking around :(
The Motu 8 pre rocks besides what ever issue I may have. Just plug my bass in and it sounds the way its supposed to, nice and warm and punchy :)

Going to start installing apps tonight..

While I agree, these RAID cards are the usual suspects in system errors and such (Have been working with servers for years)... I really hope not :(
Dropped $300 for one with an on board processor to offload from the cpu like these "fake" built into motherboard raid solutions do. I just did a clean install of Server 2008, which by the way is the best OS from MS. A few tweaks for audio and desktop experience turn into an anorexic Vista. Runs on 400meg and much more robust than XP.
I'm following your suggestion of one app at a time philosophy, and see if I can pin point the culprit. So far Nuendo 3.2 and EWQL Gold XP. Good so far....
I'll ditch the raid card if I have too...

I currently have this issue. Happens about twice a week and I'm trying to get the bottom of it. Running XP SP3.

WellI'm currently using Server 2008 with all the Vista 32 drivers and the latest driver release fixed the problem for me, works like a charm now, Lando
