Re: Fixing un-true bass response
Those are Auralex MoPads. I also have them for the NS-10's, but I did not put them in for the prototype. I am ordering the supplies for the sound proofing hopefully this week. Does the speakers look like they are in a better spot? I actually ended up re-wring the whole studio, and worked hard at seperating the electrical from the audio chords.
I thank everyone for your help so far. I have noticed a huge difference just from getting the speakers away from the wall alone. I have them about 3 feet from the back wall. Any ideas as to how far the unit should be from the back wall?
Thanks,
J-

Re: Fixing un-true bass response
I know at the back of my Mackies I've got a setting for room size/speaker distance from the wall. Seems to make a difference. But if you wanted to get creative, you could try using the "Golden Mean" measurement. Just google and you'll probably find what I'm talking about. It may not work, but at least you'll feel like a scholar.
'Mopeds', eh? What are they, diesel?
[definitely better than the "standing on a meter bridge" days...]

Re: Fixing un-true bass response
Does anyone have any suggestions for how many traps to make. I was going to make 2ft X 4ft X 4 inches. Do they all need to be 4 inches deep, or can I make a few of them 2 inches deep? I was thinking I need about 12 - 14 of them, but I wanted to get some opinions before I started ordering supplies.
Re: Fixing un-true bass response
Fill the corners , most of the back wall and spot behind the monitors with 4".
Then 2" panels for RFZ,e.g. sidewalls between you and the speakers (mirror trick ).
Couple of clouds will help immensly.
As a start.

Re: Fixing un-true bass response
I want to thank every one for your help. So far, I was able to convince my family of my x-mas gift, and they all chipped in to get some tiles for me. Here is a cheezy picture of the room not cleaned up yet. I am hoping the next few days to get some better pictures. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I have not had a chance to mix, but just talking alone in the room is a big difference.
Thanks,
J-

Re: Fixing un-true bass response
I don't see any room treatment at all? I would definitely start there. If you don't "have" to have the cabinets that would be a good place for the Bass traps if I am looking correctly at your room set up.

Re: Fixing un-true bass response
Man, I just installed these today under my KRK Rokit 6's with the full 8 degree up-tilt (I tried everything before finalising), and feel like I have new loudspeakers!
The irony is that that was my original goal today, but I don't want to go into the details as the deal fell through for nefarious reasons. This got me to thinking about more stop-gap measures while saving up for "step-up" loudspeakers, little realising what a world of difference the Auralex MoPads would make.
I already had the Auralex Gramma platform for my KRK Rokit 10 sub-woofer, but I didn't know about the MoPads (I had missed this thread as I didn't feel I had time to get sucked into my favourite topic at this time
).
They had them prominently displayed at Guitar Centre this weekend, and after doing a little bit of research today, I concluded they would be a very wise $40 investment that could only do good, regardless of whether I upgrade my monitors.
Well, obviously, the short of it, is that I now have true bass response, for the first time in my new(ish) apartment (The Rokit RP6's were perfect for my previous apartment). I had always figured I would need to acoustically treat the room, which makes the landlord nervous, but the MoPads did the trick!
