828 and OSX Crashes

Post by DP Fan »

Hey everyone. I have an 828mkII and I'm using it with Digital Performer 6.01. I'm running OSX 10.5.5. I just downloaded and reinstalled the driver for the 828 from MOTU's website.

The basic problem is that when I have the 828 on...I get very frequent crashes of the OS. The screen goes grey and I get that unpleasant 'you need to restart your computer' message. After restarting, I get that 'the OS unexpectedly quit' message.

The computer runs fine when the 828 is off. When I turn the 828 on...computer crashes. I've been using the 828 for about 4 years with no prior problems...

I've had the computer for about 6 months and everything had been working fine. About a week ago this started happening. The only thing that changed a week ago was I did some seemingly unrelated software updates (iTunes 8.0.2, QuickTime 7.5.5, and Security Update 2008-007).

Any thoughts?

Things I've already tried...

I reset the 828 to factory settings.
I reinstalled the driver.
Swapped Firewire cables.
Rebuilt P-Ram.
Repaired permissions.
Unplugged all other hardware.

Status remains the same. Turn on 828 = OS crash.

Hi, I'm having the very same problem. Can you tell me the procedure for factory hard reset of the 828 please? Can't find how on the motu website, - I have the original 828 (not MK2 or 3).
With thanks,
Paulp

I don't believe there is a factory reset on the original 828. MOTU recently posted new firewire drivers (MOTU Audio Installer) - try installing those if you're at the correct OSX level.

Hi Naz, Thanks for that.
Yes, I've installed latest drivers (from motu.com for 10.5.8) with no luck.
Having similar problems to the first post here. With 828 connected - the mac starts up but then develops into the kernel panic screen - so must restart or force shutdown. The 828 has always worked before the upgrade to 10.5.8 so I doubt it's a hardware problem with the 828 - too much of a coincidence! Clean install, pram, different firewire cable, uninstalled motu audio then reinstalled but no matter what - as soon as the 828 is connected (whether after the mac G5 is booted or before) the mac hangs with kernel panic screen.
I think it likely a problem with audio driver(s) clashing with something but ..... can't find any answers on motu site so will keep searching.
cheers, Paulp

Hi,

There is a nice little thread about this already. Look here:

Latest MOTU drivers are causing lots of issues. Delete all traces of new drivers and install older drivers.

This version is working with the 828's: 1.5.38352

If the version you have is 1.5.37320, it is known to cause problems with the 828 hardware. MOTU just recently updated it after their recent update.

Thanks guys, this is obviously quite a common issue. I'll be able to try the latest posted motu driver (1.5.38352) tomorrow and will let you know if it works out.
The interesting link from jasedee at (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=39800) also lets me know how to manually remove existing installed parts so there are plenty more things to try.

Hi, just a (belated) follow up.
I simply downloaded the new driver installer package from motu. Did an uninstall (through it's GUI) to get rid of older driver parts, and rebooted the G5. Ran the installer again and installed and all was then sorted out. Mac boots up with 828 connected and all functions well again.
Thanks for all your suggestions, great forum.
cheers.
