DP6 bug of death

Post by Electric Lotus »

Hello all,

I'm beyond pissed off...

So DP brings "improvements" like spinning beach ball of death, random crashes, the works...

But this one beats them all :

You record, everything looks fine: playback : a horrid static/wordclock type of sound comes out of the soundbites...They look ok...then you zoom way in them...and it starts looking like it sounds : flatlined....even weirder, when recording with sequence window zoomed in, it displays fine, until you press stop.
Moreover, it shifts the bites forward in time ???

Did the usual rounds of "fixes" : Repair permissions, trashed prefs, re-installs, using another Login User, load sequence into new project, bla bla blah...
Contacted Motu, slow to respond, avoiding the problem : Helllllllloooooooo ?
I pay my bills using MOTU products, and buy them top dollar, what's going on ?

I lost a client today, I'm furious, the studio looks bad, I look incompetent, not to mention, MOTU users as well !!!! GGGgggrhhhh.

Never had a problem with earlier versions...

Anyone solved this issue ?
Anyone got a 5.13 version working to share ? I demanded MOTU to ship me an earlier working version than DP6, still unanswered...
Might have to go back to DP4.6

I'm afraid to record anything, and a band is due to record this week-end !

Thanks everyone !

That's a problem that I've seen in DP5 before and somehow, audio files get mysteriously corrupted. I've opened old sessions and had one or two soundbites with the same issue. I don't know what causes it but it's not just relegated to DP6. I've seen it happen maybe twice over the last 3 years and I've always been saved by my backups. If this happens as soon as you hit stop after recording a take, you might possibly have a problem with your hard drive.
I'm sure others in this forum that are more knowledgeable about file allocation and OS management can shed more light on this issue.

Although it's never happened to me I feel your pain and I'm sorry it happened to you.

Were you recording SD2 files or broadcast wave?

Since 6 I inly record with BWAV files as SD2 files always have had problems over the years.

The symptoms appear regardless of file type (SDII or WAV), nor of frequency...
I always use 24 bit.

I doubt it's a drive issue, since the waveform is not displayed after an overview is generated, for new files.
Did run tests with Techtools Pro, and all is jolly in my hardware dept...

Dug up a version of 5.11 for a test run, never had that happened with this version...shall see...

Still really pissed off...

Thanks guys for your kind responses, though

I have seen this too, exactly as you describe. Not sure how far back, but certainly over the last several years. It sounds like a loud digital burst. The only thing more disturbing that losing the audio that contains these things, is the fear of blowing my speakers (and ears) when they occur. I have no clue what causes it.

I have experienced this a few times. Often when I have a lot of fades in the audio tracks. I can usually make it go away by merging soundbites.

Good news : don't use DP6.01 :)

re-installed 5.11, and guess what: it works !

I was getting the problem with only 4 audio tracks, and no plug-in inserted, even after minimizing the bundles....go figure....

Still pissed-off ? You bet !

For what it's worth. I'd email that to Motu.

I hope they get this sorted soon.

Update sit in anybody?

I'm starting to think DP6 isn't friendly to PPC Macs. I see that you have a PPC Mac.

I'm getting more inclined to declare DP 5.13 as the end of the road for me until
I get an Intel Mac, which will be sometime in 2010 or when the economy turns
around, whichever comes first.

Well, talked to Mike @ tech support, and he really tried to help, and was thinking outside the box with approaches on how to get things done...no solutions alas to the issue. However, did get customer support to send me a 5.13...
At least they're doing what they can, which is definitely a step in the right direction in me sticking to MOTU...

They never had any problem like mine, did anyone else report these symptoms ?

Oh and thank you to all those who sent me private messages offering to help out, I'm really appreciative of this forum !!!

Best regards,

Olivier,
