Spinning Beach ball of death on "Stop" DP5.13

Post by rsaltmarsh »

Ok, so I am plagued by this reoccurring thing. I am listening, everything is playing back as it should, 20-30 % CPU usage, then I press stop... it stops... the play indicator in the transport stays on and I get the spinning wheel of death. I let it go for an hour once to see if it would come out of it. No joy. Have to force quit and re-launch. It's becoming very annoying. this doesn't happen every time, just about once every 30 minutes. I have trashed the prefs, dumped the undo history, cleaned out unused bites... normal maintenance stuff for a crash free DP. Running no VI's, no other apps. All other tracks other than what I am mixing are disabled. Here's the set up:

DP 5.13, Mac OS 10.5.5; UAD-1; PPC Dual 2.0Ghz, 4.5GB RAM, Mixing via FW to Tascam DM3200 / all drivers up-to-date

Thanks.
2.8 Quad, 6 GB Ram, OS 10.6, DP 7.21; UAD-2; Waves; Tascam DM3200, Lots of mic's & goodies. Original user of MOTU Performer back in the late 80's.

I had similar problems :
1. Quit on stop recording
2. Spinning ball on save

Since I work always with a small buffer - 128 - no problem.
Try it.

Have you turned off Pre fill buffers?

Yep, turned off the pre-fill buffer. I will try and lower buffer but can't go to low as lots of plug's going on in my mix phase. I can probably get away with 512. Still had it crash on me 5 times on Saturday. Ugh

I have the spinning beach ball when I hit stop sometimes in 5.13 also. I've tried to track it down by eliminating and adding plugz, VI's back in. So far it looks as if Stylus RMX is the culprit. I'm not 100% sure of this. Will report back.

I forget, but does 5.13 have pre-rendering?

I'm running 6.01, I have the same problem with the addition of crashing while I'm editing audio files in the sequence editor. I average about 8 crashes a day. Doesn't matter how many plug-ins I'm running. Very, very frustrating.

5.13 has it for audio and audio effects only. VI pre-rendering was introduced in DP6.

Anyone else here running Stylus RMX? I haven't used this machine with 5.13 enough to really try it out.

Does anyone who does NOT use RMX experienced the beachball on stops? I'm very curious.

I have never had Stylus RMX on my system and I get these same types of crashes on a daily basis. It seems to start happening to me once I start automating the mix and editing automation. Don't know if that is directly related but I can work for hours on a mix with no crashes but almost always once I get some automation going, that's when the crashing begins.
I have had sessions that would crash on stop all the time so I tried creating a new DP session and loading the chunk from the problem session and this usually helps things out a lot.

Hmm... that's interesting. That may be what I've experienced, too, but your fix makes things that much more perplexing.
