Audix Drum Mics

Post by therealbigd »

I've been using (in a live situation) Audix drum mics for a while now, and have always put the D6 in the kick drum (as per its purpose).

A lot have people have told me, in the studio, the D4, primarily a floor tom mic, sounds very good in the kick drum, and takes away a lot of the low end "mud".

I noticed it does go "down" to 40Hz, but the response really does start to dramatically tail off at 50-55. Maybe thats a bit too high up.

Does anybody have any experience of one or both of these mics? I do love a clear kick drum sound, so would be interested to put a D4 in my kick, but of course want enough bass in my bass drum!

I have the Audix DP5 set, the version that originally came with their D1 for snare. I sort of use a hybrid of these mics in the studio now meaning, I no longer use the D6 on kick nor do I use the D1 on snare. I still use the D2's on the High and Mid Toms while I use the D4 on the low tom, but I use a Mojave Audio MA-200 on the kick and then (sometimes) a Blue Kickball on the beater. Instead of the D1 (or in your case the i5) on snare, I use an AKG C460B. Do you have a large diaphragm tube or even a FET mic? What pres are you using as this is a BIG part of the equation as well. I have the MA200 going through a channel on a Focusrite ISA828. Previously I was using the D6 through a Presonus ADL600, but while I like the D6 and love it live---and certainly it's excellent in the studio, you just can't replace a real tube (or powerful FET, like a Blue Mouse) on the kick drum.

I have the same Audix set as BradLyons. I use the D6 on the kick with a tube mic pre (Sebatron vmp-2000eVU) for the sound I want (full and clear). Nothing does the trick like a little tube. I've only ever used the D4 on the floor tom.

pre-amps wise I use a TLAudio tubetracker desk, so they're nice TLA valve pres.

I'm not buying the set, I'm just interested in the D6 or the D4. Buying one or the other.

I have sussed out my own set of drum mics too, a Beta 57 either side of the snare, Sennheiser e604s each side of the Toms, and one on top of the rack tom, with an e602 underneath. I love the sound I get from those. Will upload a sample.

currently using an M88 on kick beater and a C414 inside but really liked what we get from the Audix stuff live, just mainly wondered if anybody had tried the 4 on both the kick and floor tom, as well as the 6 on kick, and could make an opinion on the comparison really.
