Is this computer strong enuff?

Post by clarke »

Greetings to the the board.
I've cometed myself to building my own
in home studio.
Wanted to get it started useing
g4 pwr book (1 gig CPU) 256 Ram.
with the 8PRE until i get the $$ for an IMAC
i know i can bump the ram up to 1gig
would this be enuff to record useing all 8 inputs
at the same time? im looking to do live band (drums)
recording in my live room, and didnt want to get
clients inline an not have this thing hold up.

Is this strong enuff?
im using DP4.6/reason.

Pretty sure it would if you can upgrade the RAM a bit. 256 is very little for you to work with. Which version of OS X are you using? If your answer is higher than 10.3.x you definitely need to upgrade. RAM is something that OS X eats up like none other. I use a powerbook g4 with something like a 333 mhz processor at my job when we go on location, but it has 512MB of RAM and we have a firewire hard drive. You'll really want an external because the internal hard drive is really slow.

All in all, it might be, but I wouldn't feel safe working with that.

Obviously, a newere computer would be a significant help....but until then, this computer will work but you absolutely must have more ram!
Thank you,

Nooooo! Don't mention the "R" word, Brad. [Looks around worriedly]

[Whispers] "RAMFro's back as of yesterday, and he's got a new slogan to boot. It's '16G is the new 4G".
Mum's the word. See you on the hustings."

[Monkey hobbles into the distance, the creek of his mobile poo cleaning rig's axle permeates the hypnotic tones of his shuffling feet, set to a background of traditional organ-grinding toons from his portable, er, organ grinder.]

Err, umm. Clarke, don't mind us. Sometimes we get a little off topic and James has to jump in and send us to the corner.

Welcome aboard! You'll find some really good folks here, and amid all the nonsense, some great info.

Oh, no.
[Monkey's complexion turns white as snow]

Never mind Phil, you're a good kid and I know you mean well.
Mind you, if RAMFro starts tellin' this guy he needs 16G minimum, that the silicon content must be of consistent quality and origin across all chips, that his outdated RAM modules can be ground up and used as guitar nut lubricants for fluid string movement and tuning, or that it might be an idea to do away with his hard drive and install a bank of RAM modules in an expansion chassis and record exclusively within POLAR, don't say I didn't warn you.

More often than not though, after we've touched upon every subject known to man, we find ourselves back where we started.
I s'pose it's a measure of self discipline that we're committed to exploring all areas, knowing that we'll always end up where we start.

Yeah Clarkie, welcome to our humble abode.
Please excuse the skid marks on the walls - some crazed little chimp just blazed through here with a big gun and a pile of poomunition.

Or to put it another way, amongst all the info here you'll find some great nonsense.

We're not crazy, everyone else is......at least that's what my therapist said before I shot him. And well the judge looked at me and said I belonged in a mental hospital, but that just proved everyone else was crazy instead because if they weren't---they wouldn't be there already! hehehehe

I've made two records with a powerbook Titanium G4 667MHz.
That was a great machine.
I had upgraded ram to 684Mo and hard disk to 100Go 7200rpm.

Just had to be cautious on plugins. Keep these simple rules in mind :
Low buffer (256) with very few stock plugins for tracking step.
High buffer (1024) with some plugins (preferably DP stock ones) for mixing step.
Be cautious about third party plugins, which are often CPU hog.
Be extremely cautious about virtual instruments : use none or very CPU-light ones (as DP stock VI, or Reason/Rewire VI).

But, surely, great music can be done with your machine.
dAn Shakin' all over! :unicorn:
DP11.34, OS12.7.6, MacBookPro-i7
Falcon, Kontakt, Ozone, RX, Unisum, Michelangelo, Sparkverb
Waldorf Iridium & STVC & Blofeld, Kemper Profiler Stage, EWIusb, Mixface
JBL4326+4312sub, Behringer X32rack
Many mandolins, banjos, guitars, flutes, melodions, xylos, kalimbas...

thanks guys
I like the skid marks on the wall
they add style to the room
I ended up getting a G4 Dual 1gig with 1.5 gig of Ram
desktop unit for the studio, and got a great deal on a G4 1.25g cpu
with 2Gig ram 15in pwr book for working at home on mixes.
with the 8pre and the Mbox1 i get 10 input recording with
no problems so far no big issues other then what ive posted elsewhere on the boards.
