Ultralite mk3: No errors, but also no sound!

Post by steph »

Hey you all,

Yes I am new, and the only reason I found this forum is because I have a problem with my ultralite mk3. I read most posts and my problem hasn't come up anywhere so I thought I post it here. Maybe I am missing something (besides from the respons of the motu tech department hehe). Here goes:

I installed the ultralite, first with the old, and later with the new drivers. And everything just went perfect. Ran the xp firewire patch just to be sure. My pc can see the ultralite and I can select it in ableton/soundforge/etc. But here's the thing: there's no sound! My pc tells me it's playing through the ultralite, but there's no signal in cuemix. Only when I plug in a mic or other input, I can hear something. I can also change samplerates, play with the cuemix software. It seems like it's not a firewire issue (but just to be sure I ordered a TI firewire card) because I can work with the software. Also recording something isn't possible, because there's no signal. Maybe I am just a total idiot and missing a setting or something (although I tried alot!), what could be the problem?

Thanks for any reply ;)

Hey Steph,

Have you tried to import any audio into a "track" for playback? You would have to assign that output to cuemix to listen to it. You can also assign it to the "main" output and to an amplifier to monitor.

I am an old audio guy, so I had to re-learn the new-fangled way of doing things. Cuemix is used for recording (monitoring) and for headphone output. Then when you mix it down, you use the software main mixer output for final mixing.

Hi steph,

I have the same problem with u , and my OS is Windows XP SP2, I also have a Texas Instrument 1394 firewire card (with twin Ti chipset)

I have used the MOTU Techlinks and the service is the worst in the world, it let me be very disappointed.

But I plugged in my friend's Mac Book, it works very fine.

I think maybe the MOTU's XP driver just like a SXXT...

Thanks guys!

@Hal: I am pretty sure I did what you wrote down, becuase I tried almost every music output configuration in my current setup. I just tried it. Ableton is telling me it's playing through the motu. Meters going up and down on my screen, but nothing in cuemix or the display of the ultralite. No errors whatsoever. Only when I turn the motu off. Ableton starts screaming there's no audiodevice anymore hehe. I have this feeling it's a routing problem, but I really don't know which knob to turn anymore :/

@jerry, so the install went just fine? No errors but also just no sound? Tomorrow I will get the new firewire card, so I hope it works. I will give it a good new go then... Now forst some sleep ;)

Jerry,

It seems like it's not meant to be. The company I ordered the firewire card send me a PCIexpress version, which didn't fit in my pc. If things work out I should get the right one today/tomorrow ;)

HI ,

make sure in ableton that you have selected an output in the Motu Asio Driver section and remember that in MOTU Land

1and 2 are the Phones Out
3and 4 are Analog 1 and 2
5and 6 are Analog 3 and 4
7and 8 are Analog 5 and 6 ( confused yet)
9and 10 are Analog 7 and 8
11and 12 are Left and Right Main out and
13and 14 are SPDIF

Watch the meters on the front of the unit rather than the Cuemix software

Hope that helps

Hi Greg Kershaw,

I've tried it in Nuendo (have selected the Motru Asio Driver), there is no any meter appearing in Cuemix or on the front of the Ultralite mk3 ...

it's very strange.

I just got my Ultralite mk3 and am having the same problem. Initially, the Ultralite installed fine with Motu driver updates, etc., but when I'd go to use it in Ableton I would get intermittent (about every 10-20 seconds) audio dropouts accompanied by high frequency beeps and bloops. I tried readjusting the buffer to no avail. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling - no success.

Then I came across TheRealRoach's firewire rollback/registry hack fix on this forum (http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... 14&t=31518).

I spent some time on that last night and successfully completed all of the steps (my firewire drivers now show up as the versions corresponding to SP1). After doing this, I tried reinstalling the latest drivers from MOTU. Everything started up fine, but then I began having the "No Audio" problem. Cuemix soesn't show anything on the meters (although - I can hear my sounds coming through the headphone out. If I adjust the level of each channel strip in Cuemix, I hear the corresponding adjustment in my headphones (connected to the Motu front panel). So - firewire communication seems to be happening at some level.

Soooo...then I tried reeper's driver update. Once this was installed, the meters began working in Cuemix again, but the intermittent freezes/high frequency bleeps came back.
While watching the task manager - it appears that each time one of these dropouts occurs, Cuemix simply stops working. CPU usage goes to 0.

Also - most likely related - before installing reeper's driver:
I only see channel pairs for the Motu as options for Default playback device, Default Recording device, etc in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices.
Shouldn't I be seeing options like "MOTU Wave?"

Anyway - I'm thoroughly frustrated at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

My system specs:
Dell Latitude E6500
INtel Core 2 Duo (2.53 GHZ Harddrive, 6M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
Windows XP Pro x32
4.0 GB RAM
160 GB harddrive, 7200 RPM
NVIDIA NVS 160 graphics card
I'm not sure what make the firewire chipset is.
I use Ableton Live 7.0.10
