2408 MkIII Not recognised by 424 in Win x86 or x64

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone here might have had a similar situation to me, becuase i keep posting to the techlinks support area at MOTU and simply get nil response.

Anyhow - as a start, the overview is, My 2408MkIII cannot be seen by my 424 PCI card (not PCIe).


I have done numerous tests on my system, of which i have dual boot 32bit & 64 Bit OS's to see if 64bit drivers make a difference, but NO.

What i did do was install it on an friends older PC (Dual Xeon) - and it worked first go.

You would deduce a hardware conflict, but NO, Windows device manager shows no conflict what so ever - the 424 installs without a hitch in 32 & 64 bit version.

HOWEVER - what i did notice was that on my friends PC (where it worked) after the 3 main PCI drivers were installed (AUDIO-WAVE-GSIF) his PC installed about another 5 drivers i rekon? it was too fast to see in the little bubble near the new hardware icon, BUT - i did see stuff like "streaming clock" or "clock system", things like that.

I never saw any of this on any of my installs (32bit of 64 bit). I can only assume that these sync/clock drivers are what is stopping my 2408 locking to the 424 PCI card.

I have tried rolling back to earlier drivers (some suggest this works on this forum), but no affect.

Have updated the BIOS on my motherboard, disabled just about all integarated perhipherals (except USB so my KB & mouse will work).

I also completely blew away both versions of XP re-installed fresh and went straight for MOTU drivers, no Motherboard drivers no video drivers, just XP then MOTU, still no joy.

ENVIROMENTALS:

Below is alist of the enviroment variables for anyone who might be able to help me.

Primary OS (XP SP3 x86) - 64 bit version is only for driver testing
Running on board RAID (From Intel Mem controller)
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.8G
Gigabyte EP45-DS4P (Intel P45 Chipset - Intel Mem controller ICH10R)
4x1 Gig OCZ RAM
Sapphire HD4850 Vid Card

Motherboard only has 1 PCI slot, so i cant move it around to force a hardware update


Thanks again contributors, i hope there is someone out there that can shed light on this bloody frustrating situation.

PS: Forgot to add that my card is a PCI (not X or e) card, i think it is the early one. It has only 1 slot/cut in the PCB that goes in to the PCI slot, AND it has 2 green wires that are running from the top of the 424 board to the bottom. I can only assume that my MB which has a PCI compliant slot is actually a 5Volt slot, meaning my card should work ? right?

Hi All,

To avoid any confusion about cards and voltages.

I can confirm that my card is a PCI card not an X or E version.

It is a 5 Volt Card.

I took to my motherboard with a multimeter and measured several test points on the actual PCI slot and it measured 4.99 Volts exactly.

SO - In summary. The card is an old 5 Volt PCI card in a 5Volt PCI slot.

I was actually hoping it would be 3.3Volts and a simple card upgrade would fix it

There is more than just a voltage difference between the old PCI-424 and the newer PCIX-424 card. The chips on these cards are different. In addition to the info about voltage issues, Motu's tech note page also states:

PC motherboards that utilize dual-processors, hyperthreading, or 64-bit processing will also not likely work with the original 424 card.

So, unfortunately, I suspect you may need to upgrade your PCI-424 to a PCIX-424 or PCIe-424.

I didn't pick-up on that one only because the other system that i tried the 424 card on that worked was a dual CPU system, but i didn't pick-up on the get out of jail free statement from MOTU "will also not likely work" - hmmm

Will have to seek out a PCIe.

As a result of all this i'll try and put together a sticky thread for noob's to the MOTU scene like me as a sort of checklist.

No worries. It seems to be a case of hit & miss when it comes to the original PCI-424. It works for some and not for others. I guess it all comes down to the motherboard it's plugged into.

If you're going to replace the card, I can vouch for the PCIe-424. It works well, and should be a little more future-proof than the PCIX-424.
