WindowsXP & firewire

Post by JohannS »

Is the following situation working (it’s one of the things I would like to do with the 828mk3, which I intend to buy..):
828mk3 is connected to a WindowsXP computer through firewire. The output of the standard soundcard is not connected to the active speakers (as usual..) but to 2 line inputs of the 828mk3. A song is playing via Windows Media Player and the 828mk3 over the active speakers which are connected to the main outputs of the 828ml3. I play my guitar which is connected to one of the suitable inputs of the 828mk3 along with the song coming into the line inputs (coming from the Media Player) and record the song and my guitar at the same time on separate tracks in Adobe Audition. Monitoring the inputs (and not the signal back from Audition) would be sufficient for me in this case..
In some future cases, this would be the ideal situation for me, but I’m afraid is would be too good to be true. But is it possible??
Thanks.

I think it should work if the DAW you're using is set to use the MOTU ASIO driver instead of the WDM driver. But wouldn't it be a lot easier if you just imported the audio file that you're playing back with Windows Media Player into a track in the DAW program? The audio quality should be better that way too because there's no D/A-A/D conversion and you're not using the (potentially lower quality) D/A converter in the built-in sound card.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Thanks, 1nput0utput. I was thinking to use the 828 as a standard mixer to play the music from the standard soundcard and play along whenever i would like it. (I will use the 828 also for recording vocals, guitar, bass on separate tracks while overdubbing etc, I'm familiar with that..). But the situation of playing from the Windows Media Player, and recording this output AT THE SAME through firewire and DAW on the computer, could that give some kind of bad loop? (I know about importing audio files into a DAW track, and add a new track while playing along..)
I wonder also, could the firewired 828 be set as the default windows audio output thing; but where (ie in which input channels) would I see in that case the computer sound output (eg from the Media Player) in the mixing software of the 828?

i don't see a problem here at all???

cant you just use control panel to set all audio to go into the MOTU? and lose the built in sound card altogether?
Just remember kiddies, You can't polish a turd.

Macbook Pro 2.4GHz 15" i5 + MBP 2.4 15" C2D, MOTU 828mkII FW (Logic 9), Wilson Benesch Arcs + Cyrus Amps; PMC DB1S+ & MC2 Amps; REL Acoustics Strata 5 Sub.

i'm sorry, I'm getting more and more confused..
The inputs into the 828mk3 are coming in as separate channels in my DAW through firewire, am I right?
(It's very incovenient, that MOTU does not supply a downloadable (for free..) User Guide before you actually have bought the unit..)

I have an apparently unsolvable problem. I have installed the latest driver from the MOTU site for my 828 MKii and apparently there is no way of activating a wdm option. Therefore I cannot record a high quality presentation with MOTU 828. Mtìy PC is a Othisba Tecra with Realtek GD, full update. Has anyone a solution ? Where can I find the bloody WDM driver ?
