Conection between Motu 896 HD and old QUAD 303

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Conection between Motu 896 HD and old QUAD 303

Post by marcosdipaolo »

As you imagine reading the subject of the post I have a Motu 896 HD and the amp I use to feed my Yamaha NS10 is an old Quad 303.

What I wanted to know is what do an expert would think about the necessary adaptation from the XLR main outputs from the motu to the unbalanced DIN-4 pins input from the quad. Also about how the cable should be welded (pin configuration)

Thanks a lot.

It sounds like you need to find the pin-out for that 4-pin DIN connector. Since it's unbalanced, the pins will be: left channel signal, left channel ground, right channel signal, and right channel ground. Then you'll build a cable that goes like this:

_4-pin DIN_ _dual XLRs_
left channel signal -> left channel XLR pin 2
left channel gound -> left channel XLR pin 1
right channel signal -> right channel XLR pin 2
right channel gound -> right channel XLR pin 1

Also, on both the XLRs, I think you will need to connect pin 3 to ground as well. The alternative would be to leave pin 3 unconnected. Maybe someone with more experience than me can chime in and clarify.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

I would say the last guy was mostly correct. You would definitely need pin 3 tied to pin 1 for MOTU circuit stability and good wiring practices.

SInce the input levels are 1/2 volt for 30 watts of speaker volume, I would connect all wiring with the power off. Turn on the sound source and the MOTU units first making sure there is little or no volume coming from them. Then turn on the Quad 303 and wait for it to settle down. Start your music and slowly increase it's level until some sound is heard. Check your settings and listen for extra system noise, etc. Since the Quad 303 has no volume controls, it depends on the output from your mixer (MOTU 896). If you do hear a lot of system noise and music get's loud quick, you may have to construct a pad for the inputs. The MOTU 896's are capable of +4 db which would be a killer volume level for you!

Here is a link with the specs <http://www.flashbacksales.co.uk/manualp ... 33-303.pdf>

Good luck! Just some comments from an old audio guy who retired from the sound/electronics industry. If you need further info, send me an email. Be glad to help.
