Alesis Monitor One Mk2 repair

Post by johnnytucats »

Anyone have repair info on these speakers? I had a tweeter go out but it's the electronics inside, apparantly. Swapped tweeters and same result...no tweeter output. Then, noticed a smoky smell inside the the problem speaker. It's Friday and I can't call Alesis. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing and if it might be something simple like a blown cap...but I don't even know how to dismantle the speaker.

If you dismantle the speaker you'll void warranty.

When you say that you have swapped tweeters and still there was no sound, do you mean from the same tweeter or from the same monitor?
If it's a crossover problem, yes, it can be anything from a condenser to a coil, but, burnt tweeter coils can have a smell too.

If you have a multi-meter select resistance and meter across the terminals of the tweeter - make sure at least one of the wires from the cross-over is not connected to the tweeter . If you get a dc resistance reading then the tweeter is not completely ruined. It may, however, have sustained some damage when the electronics failed. What reading is there if any? A nominally 8ohm component should read in the area of at least 6 ohms dc if the coil is healthy - anywhere below that would normally indicate some degree of voice coil damage and, as such, the tweeter would sound distorted and harsh.

As to the cross-over and/or amp module problem it is not advisable for you to even start trying to work on that - definitely a job for a properly qualified and/or experienced person. You need to repair damage but also be able to ensure that the reason for that failure is ascertained. So many times when a protection circuit is engaged or a fuse blows on a piece of equipment people just fire up again with a new fuse and the cause for the original fuse blowing is still there - thus allowing further and more expensive damage to the circuit to occur.

Thanks for your replies.

The speakers are well out of warranty. Both tweeters work fine in the good speaker.

As you may know, these are not expensive speakers. If I can't replace the circuitry myself I'll be getting something better. A trip to any decent repair shop will cost about as much as replacing one of these.

Still, any advice is welcome.

Update on this thrilling thread:

I've easily removed the crossovers from the speakers and compared the meter readings on the components. The bad one has a resistor that's out of acceptable range, and the other components give comparable readings between units (except for another resistor on the GOOD speaker being wrong). I've ordered 3 sets of components, since they're so cheap, and will change things out one at a time until it's working again.
