OMFII from MXF AVID Project ---> DP6 ::: The WORKAROUND

Post by gref »

OK, I've been fiddling with this for quite a while and I came up with this:

Requirements: AUDIODESK 2.14 (included with Motu I/O hardware like 828 etc.. prior versions might work too)
AVID-system being able to work with MXF-media (usually all HD-compatible systems like adrenaline etc.)
The complete AVID-project with all mediafiles

attempting to open an OMFII from a MXF-project in DP or Audiodesk I always got the error message 53 'can't find media'… so this is what I did:

1. In your original AVID-project duplicate the sequence you want to export (control or command D) and put it in a new bin.
2. Export that sequence as OMFII without video tracks and handles set to taste with embedded media (you better get rid of all audioeffects first!!!!).
3. Get out of the project and create a new project meeting ntsc or pal sd standards (25i, 29.97i) depending on the project the OMF came from.
4. In settings choose media creation (F5) and in the last TAB be sure the file format is set to OMF and not MXF !!!
5. Import the OMF you have created in step 2.
6. check the resulting sequence if all seems OK and online.
7. export that sequence as in step 2.

8. Go to your DP6 DAW with Audiodesk installed and import that OMF into Audiodesk.
9. You should get an Audiodesk project that can be opened in DP6.
10. Save that as a DP-project.

I couldn't check that workflow for the same issues with AAF as i did not have enough time at hand, but maybe someone else can and post the results here.

Quite a hassle, isn't it?

I don't understand why MOTU does advertise for DP6 with the OMF-import feature when it actually doesn't seem to work in DP6, but then again I'm used to that kind of policy from AVID…

I hope that helps!

Lots of work, for sure. But AAF does work in DP 6 (so far) and I prefer that format anyway. Not having Audiodesk, your workaround isn't good for me. But I'm sure someone will appreciate the post when they need it. :)

Thanks.

I know it's worth s**t when you don't have Audiodesk.
Wasn't there the same poblems with AAF, when it comes from an AVID-MXF project? Hmmm…

There WERE AAF problems which seem to have been ironed out in DP 6 (to my great delight). I prefer AAFs as I get the fades as well as the edits. When all else fails, the editors will send me a checker boarded set of audio files. In some ways, if I need to do the mixing and fine editing. "Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts."
