UAD vs Waves

Post by slybass3000 »

Hi there,
I'm wondering if some people have an idea on those two plug-ins. I have the Neve 1073 on UAD and I'm experimenting with the Waves demo of the V-series and it sounds so far fantastic, really warm compare to the UAD neve.

Your opinions are welcome,

Thanks

You won't get many favorable reviews here on the Waves stuff---not about the quality of plugins, but the quality of service. But none the less, you can deny their stuff sounds incredibly good! I have it myself and use it almost exclusively in all my mixes.
Thank you,

I don't see why they get that bad reputation because for the last couple of days I've being using their phone tech support to get the demo authorise and they have been really helpful, effiencent, and nice. I think people should try the phone line sometimes.......lol

Anyway I'm using the new Studio classic serie demo right now and I'm really impressed. Plus, the UAD plug-ins when inserted between two Waves are unsuable because of the latency, but with several Waves it is not a problem at all.

So far I'm wondering if I'm going to buy the whole bundle or individual ones, they are all good,

I have both, but I haven't been able to use the Waves stuff recently with DP. I can't get Waves to work without crashing on my Mac Pro. I think both have their pros and cons. If I had my way, I'd have both up and running.

UAD: Some really great sounding plugs, but you are limited by the hardware to a few instances on the bigger ones.

Waves: You can get many instances on faster machines, but the current version is causing problems for some users and the company support is not consistent.

are you using DP?

if i was mixing on a PTLE system, i'd go with Waves. UAD-1 is a pita to use because PTLE doesnt have delay compensation. (i think). Waves is rock solid on PT. In DP its a different story. UAD-1 works flawlessly there, with ADC and everything.

both companies make great sounding and useable stuff.
why would i want to skin a cat?

Yes I'm using DP 5.13 with OS 10.5.3 on an 8 cores mac.
UAD introduces a lot of latency because it is not totally compatible with the new Macs. Besides that I'm very impressed with the Waves VEQ-3 which is a replica of a 1073. So I was able to compare this to the UAD. So far the Waves are more analog sounding then the UAD on certain material like drums. On electric guitar they sound pretty much the same. So, I'm continuing my comparaisons. BTW, I bought the Studio classic bundle from Waves after trying out the demos.

I recommend the Wave Arts "Track Plug".

Best of luck,

I have UAD, I don't have Waves, but the biggest gripes about Waves from the guys here mainly revolve around two things;

1. WUP - having to pay a yearly fee to retain ownership of the plugins after you have purchased them (which are more expensive to begin with compared to other comparable solutions).

2. Availability of updates for DP - I remember months of waiting and frustration from the guys here for an update that would work with DP5. They (Waves) seem not to pay as much attention to DP as the other DAWs.

UA on the other hand is almost always very quick with UAD updates when compatibility issues arise with DP. When DP5 came out and had some issues with UAD, UA had a new release out very shortly after.

That said, I demoed the SSL4000 and API plugs, and they sounded amazing. Can I achieve similar results with UAD? Absolutely, but different. I would really like to have both, but can't justify the extra expense when I already have most all of the UA stuff.

I got the V-Series on sale a while ago and love it. Same goes for the UA Neve 88RS and 33609.

The Waves stuff sounds great, issue around here is concerning WUP and non-existent support for DP in 2006-2007. Seems like these problems have been solved lately, so...

I know that I've been a big mouth regarding how Waves sucks with WUP etc, but after owning one of their bundles since 2005 and not paying a dime in upgrades since then, I've decided that the $120 in WUP that I'll be paying to get DP up to speed (Intel-version) will be worth it to me. I enjoy the IRL and RenComp a lot.

That said,t here are tons of other choices out there, so demo as much as possible before buying.

Two different flavors, I use UAD 1 for mix and Waves for mastering.

Great results.
