General question: What kind of music do you write with DP?

I've made music with DP for all sorts from hypnotherapy/meditation CD's, art exhibitions, dance, short low budget films, TV ads + session drumming/programming for singers/ bands etc .... but I mainly use DP for writing my own work - I don't have the equipment or experience to mix/ produce yet to any decent standard myself, although it's fun to keep trying.
Ditto for working with orchestral instruments (VSL) which has been a complete musical revolution/ revelation for me .... TBH working with DP et all still feels unbelievable seeing as how my 'studio' was no more than a portastudio and a Lexicon MPX-100 just 7 years ago!

I'm the dweeb in the crowd. I'm not currently working on any paid jobs, so I'm just doing stuff that's fun for me.
All my stuff is orchestral, all done with VI's. I haven't really gotten into recording with DP.
I love show music and old popular songs. Recently (for my own kicks) I did orchestral versions of the old Seekers song "I'll Never Find Another You" and an oldie entitled "The Four Winds and the Seven Seas" (Hal David before he met up with Bacharach.) I'm currently working on a suite of tunes from the old Frank Loesser musical, "Where's Charley?". There's no market for any of this, but since I don't have copyright clearance it doesn't matter, because they're just for me to listen to and enjoy. Kind of like sitting at the piano and playing for my own enjoyment, only on a much larger scale.
Maybe one of these day's I'll get some more paying jobs, and then I can go back to doing music I don't really care for.

Hey Rick, I thought I was the dweeb? I've just embarked on yet another 9-month saving-for-gear period that'll either kill me or bring me a new life, and my dweebiness is therefore at an all-time low. From where I'm sitting, you're a super-dweeb, whereas I'm a super-dweeby dweeb.
Keep it up eh? Sounds to me like you're engaged in and learning about music-making, so it's not so bad is it?

I used to have a digidesign accel set up and I used D.P as the front end sequencer, etc...
I thought for songs I would use this set up and for the underscoring I do I would use D.P. with my MOTU audio set up because things go quicker. Now I've sold my digidesign stuff and I'm just using D.P. with the MOTU audio. I don't really miss the Digi set up. My intial thought was that the audio quality would be better with Digi but to tell you the truth I don't think I ever really noticed a difference.
So, long story short, there isn't any type of music I can think of that I wouldn't use it for.

I used to compose lots of jingles and music for theater too while living in Mexico City and I certainly composed on request, lots of Mariachi, Cumbia and Norteño music and while not being a fan of norteño or cumbia, I can really testify that the good Mariachi music is nothing but an amazing style which is based mainly on Huapango rhytmic metrics in 3/4-6/8 and the bass and guitars on a good mariachi, do astounding complex rhytms. In fact I am right now composing a Mexican Symphonic Poem based on Huapango-Mariachi music style.FMiguelez wrote:.
At the moment, I'm doing mostly Jingle work, and music for Mexican TV shows. The former can be pretty much anything in style, the latter is mostly orchestral stuff (my very favorite).
I would do anything EXCEPT reggaeton, mariachi, cumbia, or norteño. I dislike those styles too much. So far I've been lucky enough to not have been asked to "write" in those stlyes... pheeeeeww!
I like some Country, though. That, I wouldn't mind doing a few times
