Need an AC30ish model

Post by conleycd »

Hi folks,

I need to get a plugin for an Vox AC30 simulation. I have an AC30 but with this project I'm working on I don't have access to an acoustically treated room.

I have the TC Electronics Power Core card. I know they have an AC30 simulator for about $250 (which seems like a lot).

Any thoughts?

What do you think of this over Line6's Toneport thing with their Gearbox? They are about the same price (around $100). Anyone have any comparisons?

I don't have Gearbox so I can't directly compare them. I think that the AC30 sim on my POD2.0 sounds better than Guitar Rig, though not by much.

I have a POD 2.0 too but if I find it a bit noisy for recording. I'm planning on running my pedal board right into the emulator (which is essentially what I do for my standard rig - front load everything into the AC30). I could try the POD again...

I like NI's ability to download the software. I really hate going to music stores for software - it really should not be necessary.

I'm suspicious of that plug into the end of your guitar... feels like a Rockman and it just looks a little silly.

Didn't Gearbox use to cost a whole lot more? They are also upgrading the Silver to Gold for free. Things like that would make me nervous about buying a plugin.

The Amplitude stuff comes closets on the AC30 models IMO, vs. its Fender and Marshall models, etc. But as someone who does not primarily play guitar, I may not be the most qualified judge :-).

I think Vox is now doing software versions of their modeling on an a la carte basis? I seem to recall reading this as part of the announcement of their new hardware effects modelers (the Valvetronix series).

CC, IMHO the xt series was a decent step up from the POD 2, which itself was a big improvement over the POD. For one thing, it's way less noisy IMHO, and lacks the muddiness/tubbyness of the original two releases. It's also clearer/more glassy to my ears, the fizz appears to have subsided somewhat and there's more "bite" available should you need it. The clean sounds' improvements alone make upgrading worthwhile IMHO.

FWIW, I don't think there's as big an improvement with the X3 as opposed to the xt, but many have said they can hear distinct improvements again.

I find Guitar Rig 3 pretty good and Waves GTR3 also very good for tone. I did a bass dub with some kind of Pod and lappy a couple of months ago and I must admit it sounded really good - don't remember which Pod thingy it was 'tho.

My guess is that it may well have been a PODxt Bass bean, Big Dave. To my ears, these things produce big, clean, punchy bass tones, and are also less noisy than the original line of PODs.

For about $70 you can get Native Instruments' 'Guitar Combos'.

It is three discs.

One is a Fender, one a Marshall and one an AC-30.

You don't get all of the bells and whistles (effects) of Guitar Rig, but you do get chorus, a TS-10 and a Rat.

Being as how I don't use a lot of effects, I like this better then GR or Amplitube because I play more and tweek less.

I looked that up and I can see the site here

http://www.native-instruments.com/index ... itarcombos but I can't seem

to see it on the purchase page: http://www.native-instruments.com/index ... arline&L=1

So... I don't know if it is available anymore.

I downloaded the demo of Guitar Rig XE which I thought was pretty decent. In fact, I think I may forever be ok with the demo but I would feel unethical. Essentially, the demo has 30 minutes of use and you can't save settings. For using it as an AC30 box front loaded with my pedals - it is pretty easy to simply reset the AC30 knob controls each time.

I'll probably still buy it though.

It was canceled a LONG time ago. They recently replaced it with a dumbed-down edition of Guitar Rig, but you'll have to look it up yourself as I ignored it due to it being redundant with my full edition.

Doesn't a real AC30 in a not treated room sound better than a plug-in emulation?

If you have the AC30 just try to use it.
