I tend to like a very close mics and place mics fairly close to the rim. I've also used hi density foam cut to the lid openings at 1/4 stick. The sound is very dry, adding reverb later.

Thanks for the piano mic pic! Where did you find that?

1. I'm assuming that the red dots, for instance, are guides for possible placements of 2 mics (bass and treble) with ears being the guide and the same for the yellow if adding 2 more mics for a 4 mic setup.

2. "Foam cut to the lid opening for 1/4 stick"...Again an assumption that the foam would have some kind of cut-outs to allow either room for the whole mic to peek through or at least the boom that supports the mic.

Correct?

You are correct, cutouts for the foam to put the mic stand (boom with spider mount) thru.

Several years ago, a 2' x 6' x 4" sheet of super-dense acoustic cost about $!00. You can still get it at Foam Mart (Victory Blvd.) in Burbank if your in SoCal.

I do have about 5 or 6 Auralex panels (2x4) that are laying around and are used for various sound absorption functions.

If your room is pretty quiet that should work. The super dense foam actually muted the sound of a garbage truck less than 30' away with my windows open!
