828mk3 big installation problem!

Post by Recorder »

Just bought my new computer and having problem installing MOTU 828mk3's drivers. I updated 828mk3's firmware to 1.06 version.
I've installed corresponding drivers (included in 1.06 "software pack") on Windows XP Pro SP3 without any problem. Rebooting computer and turning on the 828, Windows begins to recognize all drivers and the installation of the drivers seems ok, but when Windows tries to load MOTU Audio Wave driver, the installation closes with this error message: "impossible to start device (Code 10)" and in Device Manager the MOTU Audio
Wave driver is listed with a yellow esclamation mark.
System information: Desktop computer with CPU Intel QX9770, Motherboard Asus P5E64 WS Evolution, RAM 4Gb DDR3, OS Windows XP Professional SP3.
Board has a VIA Firewire chipset, I've tried adding a PCI card with Agere chipset with no success (unfortunately I have any card with Texas Firewire chipset at the moment......).
Also I tried disabling motherboard's internal audio device (in BIOS, not disabling Windows' drivers), nothing changed.......
I read carefully ChiantiM's long post, but I have any particular drivers problem other than described above.
Any idea? Maybe just a Firewire chipset problem? (if so, buying the right Firewire PCI card would be a simple solution), or other Windows problem (maybe SP3)?
I just opened a Techlink in MOTU web site, but no reply for the moment. Please help, this MOTU is great and I ABSOLUTELY DON'T WANT TO REPLACE IT!!! Thank you to all.

It has been said that the 828mk3 doesn't like the VIA FW chipset or will become unstable. I have one in my DAW but decided not to try it and went with a TI chipset and have had no problem even with Vista 64. I'd go with a TI chipset and the latest drivers.

i find the 828mk3 to be a complete pain to install/update firmware no matter what FW card, i have had same performance on TI and VIA chipset tested on 3 desktop machines all running win xp.

Thank you for you reply. Yes I suspected it was a Firewire chipset problem, but as I said, I tried with a PCI card using Agere chipset and nothing changed! Exactly same problem. So I really don't understand if it's a hardware (Firewire) or software (Windows) problem......

Just tried rebooting PC with Motu turned on, didn't solved.
I received a reply from Motu techlink..... well, in a very long post they said to uninstall driver and clean manually Windows registry file! Then disable all internal audio device and reinstall 828mk3's drivers..... I will try in next days but I suspect this is a "precooked" answer..... I will post the result.

Just tried but no solution, nothing changed. Also, I discovered another bad problem during extensive test. MIDI communication seems very "slow"..... playing a normal MIDI file from my computer (played by my Kurzweil KPC2 rack synth connected to 828mk3's MIDI out) it seems a very very large latency is present, so large that some note is lost!!! Same problem playing manually on my MIDI controller (conntected to 828mk3's MIDI in). ASIO Audio drivers seems working well. So, there are two problems: audio Wave driver not initialized and MIDI "latency"...... and now? I'm really not satisfied with a so good and expensive unit in this condition (I said this in my MOTU techlink posted in their website), and it's really not a good situation having this problems in a high end product. Any other idea? Yes I know that I could replace it, but I bought it just last spring and I can not loose so much money!! Thank you for your help.

nothing seems to work on this thing, i seriously started regretting it. should have done more searches and got an RME fireface or an apogee, or at leaaast, an M-audio profire 2626... didnt know that MIDI had also problems on the 828 mk3

Well I don't know about MIDI.... maybe it's just in my unit. But I know this configuration (MIDI controller + Kurzweil KPC2) perfectly worked for years connected to my good old Echo Audio Layla24. Last spring I decided for this 828mk3 because I need a standalone audio converter, but for the moment it was not a good choice. Yes I know about RME (Apogee is really too expensive and no MIDI connections), but the problem is my money now! I hope to solve these bad issues. Thank you to all guys in this board.

Has anyone using win XP sp2 had a good clean software install, no driver issues and smooth running with an 828 mk3? My first attempts with getting the cue mix window recognized and the device to work have been extremely frustrating. Not a good start with an expensive unit like this. Never had any such problems with my M-Audio Delta.

Now MOTU support suggested trying with TI Firewire card.... I hope having one next week, but I didn't know that we are beta testers...... yes we try, we try..... and it doesn't work. I'm really disappointed with this device, and now I can not replace it immediately, it's too expensive.

So I'm here again: a friend told me to check UAA drivers in my computer, but he didn't know more details. Anyone in this board can explain this? Do you think that problem could be searched in these drivers? And possible fix? Please note that, as I said, I have new computer with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 and I automatically downloaded all updates proposed by Microsoft, so my computer seems updated, but speaking about Windows......
Maybe this post is too long.... sorry!

Don't know why..........but after a zillion attempts to load drivers in desperation I took my firewire card out of the slot and put it back in, then reinstalled the drivers and "Bingo" all works fine now.

bummer .....hope you get it sorted out ok. There is a bit of a learning curve with this device and one or two quirks, but now that I have it up and running ok it seems a pretty cool device overall.
