OMF from AVID
I am trying to open a OMF from an AVID and when I import it into the Chunks window it creates the chunk but all of the waveforms are just solid grey blocks. In the Soundbites window there is a a question mark next to all the files.

What he said. You can usually check if audio is imbedded by the size of the OMF. Under 1MB and usually there isn't audio.carrythebanner wrote:Did the OMF file have the audio embedded, or did it reference the audio files? If it wasn't embedded, you need both the OMF file and the audio files (similar to a DP project file and its associated audio files).
Also, are you using DP 5 or DP 6?

That was it. The editor forgot to embed the audio. The second OMF's came and were missing the VO track and various regions seemed very oddly placed. I chalked it up for he editor being a clown again. Turns out t was a different editor who did nothing wrong. I was able able to open the OMF's up on a Pro Tools HD rig without any problems.
I have to say this was the straw that broke my Unicorns back. I'm throwing in the towel with DP with regards to post production. I bought a PT system this week. I'm not so much knocking DP it's just a matter of using a tool I'm more comfortable with. I can simply move much faster and confidently on PT and I've been with DP since 2.6.

???
You surprise me.
Working comfortable with PT is an oximoron, but anyway.
Sometimes working with avid omf and dp is kind of hard. it is the broadcastwave format and the camera groups in avid projects that produce errors. something that will hopefully be fixed in DP 6.
Good Luck with PT. And have fun with real time bouncing in post production.
It is realy dreadful, if you have to deliver on time. Love to bounce cleenfeeds for 120 min projects. 6 hours of work for nothing more than some audiotracks for later use

ears, experience, musical background
plenty hardware and software tools
it is not about gear it's about music and sound

I hear ya about the real time bouncing it's deadly. Fortunately I work mostly in short form promo work. You know it's funny I started off in DP and when I first had to use Pro Tools I was cursing it like crazy. "The most unintuitive piece of software I've ever used ..." But after 4 years of working with it everyday I have to say the tied has turned for me. I guess I've finally experienced the old cliche that these things are just tools. They both are great and clearly get the job done but at the end of the day I need to use what is most comfortable to me and unfortunately that is PT.
I will still use DP for music projects and MIDI material but for post I could list a million things about it that slow me down and you would probably have either workarounds or just not understand why they are important. I use my tools the way I do as you do yours.
