You mention 10.4.11 in your setup , is this a mistake ?

I don't know if I already answered this thread. Too lazy to go look. I had to have my PCI card replaced for the same reason: the card just goes out. In fact, my new card (now a year or two old) is starting the same behavior. My fix so far, which has not failed me yet, is to shut down the computer and pull the power cord plug out of the computer for 10 seconds, then plug it back in and start 'er up again. Then it works for maybe 8 to 10 times, and does it again.
I have a feeling it has to do with putting the computer to sleep. I try never to let it go to sleep with the PCI card engaged with a powered-up PCI unit (1296, 2408mkII) If I forget and put the computer to sleep, it will work about 3 more times, and then it stops. I have to shut down, pull plug, etc, to get it back. I'm not saying that it's a sleep problem, but sleep certainly doesn't help it any. It's a MOTU problem. The PCI card needs fixing. In my case it's a PCIe card.

Yes, the rest periods as you have described is more or less my fix too. Although I'm not sure I've tried counting 10 when I pull the Mac's plug. I usually just start restarting after a few minutes. Eventually the card wakes up. My fear is that one day it will not wake up! ...I have my computer set to never sleep btw.
Aramis, Yes, 10.4.11 is stable for me. Unless you have one, I have no compelling reason yet to change (this 424 communication problem is not a Tiger issue as demonstrated by Shoosie's config).
Dix , I was just surprised to see Tiger on the 8 cores .
Have you bought it with TIGER Originally ?
Mine is arrived with Leopard .
Yours is older right ?

Hey, I'm just getting back to this thread again. I've been working on my old G5 with the PCIx 424 card in it. No problems. I loaded Leopard 10.5.4 onto a new HD in my Mac Pro Dual core Intel and I'm having the same problem. No communication between the computer and card or the card and the 2408mk3. I don't know which. MOTU says, so far, that I should try my card in another intel mac and see what it does. I don't have another one around so that probably won't happen. They said my card checked out fine when they tested it. I did send them all the info, the MOTU audio set up screen, the expansion slot utility report and the system profiler report.

Scooter. Are you still on your second card or did they send you a third one?
I'd happily buy a new card from MOTU at this point if I could. Unfortunately, it has to go through as a return w an RA. You can't simply buy it outright. Tech support said Monday AM that they'd set it up and call me, but they have not done it yet

I'm still on my 2nd. I'm trying to get another PCIe card but I don't know if MOTU will go for it. Let me know what happens with you. I'm still waiting for a response on my last tech link.

Sorry I'm late to the party but I have some friends at a local studio who went through 2 424 cards and it wasn't until the third card that they got one working. No way to verify this, but it appears MOTU may have had a bad run of cards, maybe with some intermittent problem (see Shooshie's post above). Hence MOTU's "your card checked out OK" (yeah, in that particular moment). If it were me I'd really press them for another card. I believe they are well aware of this, but of course aren't acknowledging it publicly.
Good luck

I started up my intel mac and checked my MOTU PCI audio set up and there was my 2408mk3 and 24 i/o. They came up fine. I'm not jumping up and down because that's just what happened today for some reason.
I talked to MOTU tech support and they said the card I have now is new and tested. They said I should have the voltage checked on my computer for the PCI connection. The point I was trying to make to them is that if I take my computer into Apple and it checks out fine then something is wrong with the card and they should want to know about that. I'll probably take my computer in one more time and have it looked at and then go from there.

I restarted my intel mac and the communication is gone again.
Ya'll are making me think twice about upgrading to a 424e??
Maybe I'll go for a FW interface afterall.
I could do that also since I have an 828 mk3 here also. But I thought the whole idea behind FW interfaces were geared toward the laptop crowd. I mean if you have hard drives and other miscellaneous stuff hooked up firewire to your Mac Pro, does it make sense to connect your audio interface FW also? I thought the whole idea behind the PCI card concept was to keep that signal path somewhat isolated. And then for me there's the whole issue of the 24 i/o. That's not compatible with the 828 mk3. But with the problem I'm having right now I could sell the 2408 mk3 and the 24 i/o and go firewire. Does that make any sense?? Any thoughts on that, anyone? It seems backwards to me.

FW,agreeably may be more for the portable types. PCI does have more bandwidth as far as I know. Also doesn't FW take some CPU cycles with larger latency margins?
ah, but what about the convertors/clock being in the computer issues??
I would rather get a PCI card for budgetary reasons, but with these reports I wonder if getting upgraded convertors in an FW interface will be a better side move in the end?
