Real-time loop previewing

Post by Neleik »

I've searched for a bit, but haven't seen this...so please forgive me if it's been addressed:

I've recently returned to DP (it was the first DAW) I had ever had any experience with back in the 90's. But, for the last 5 or 6 years I've been using Cakewalk (most recently 6 Producer Edition). I just got my studio all set up with DP 5.13 and it was mostly because I was sick of the on going catastrophes with Windows (at least one major one a year). I actually loved my set up with Sonar, plugins, and effects. But, one feature that I really miss from my Sonar projects since getting DP up and running is the ability to browse the hard disk for samples and have them actually preview in real-time while my project was playing (actually time synced for "smart loops").

I would use this to find drum loops and other things and many times, I'd find something that just sounded great with my current song by accident because I was able to hear it playing along with my work.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything in DP that does this. It appears I have to stop my work flow and just grab 10 clips at a time and hope there's a gem or go back and drop a few more into the soundbites window. All the while still not being able to hear them with my project until I've dragged them all into the sequence window, needless to say taking a lot more time than just previewing it as I go.

Sorry for the long winded explanation, but am I missing something or does this feature not exist in DP?

DP doesn't have this. there was a few threads about it earlier. audio ease has one called snapper you can get. it's pretty good...but there is one that is better than this. the name however escapes me at the moment. anyone care to chime in?

Take a look at AudioFinder and see if this will fill in some of the gaps for you:

If you are using leopard on a mac you can browse and play any audio file with quick look. A great feature eliminating the use or purchase of the aforementioned audio programs.

I also forgot, the Apple Loops Utility will preview loops as well. Plus it allows you to add metadata

Cool...thanks for the responses guys. I'll take a look at a few of these options and see what I can come up with. I never realized how much a part of my work flow this was until I didn't have it anymore. Hopefully, I'll at least get close. Thanks again...I'll check back if anyone else has additional suggestions.

I gave this a shot, plus it came bundled with DP6. However, the audio performance was horrendous. I'm using a Presonus FP10 interface and even after switching to the built-in sound, it didn't improve. I wonder if other people are having an issue with this software. However, it was close to what I was looking for although not exact.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Live does this, of course, and I there is a lite version you used to be able to get pretty easily. Not the same as being built in, but...

Audio Finder is great, but that's not the same as hearing in real time matched to your track.
