Using DP5 with Mackie Onyx

Post by mhayesmusic »

Hello all,

I have access to a Mackie Onyx w/ firewire card option installed. I haven't yet tried using it, but I have a few questions about the use of it for recording.
Anyone out there using it for recording all instruments or at least live drums using it. here's a couple of questions:

-First and foremost. The firewire option: does it really record discrete channels directly into DP using the firewire option?

-how are the preamps for recording live drums? I don't have money to splurge for 8 kick ass mic pres to record live drums but this seems like a very reasonable option to me, not to mention that I have acces to borrow this thing at will (not even rental). more like here take it when you need it :D .

I would appreciate anyone's input on any situations they've used it exactly in the same way....thanks much...peace!!!!!!

Hi

I have the mackie mixer and although I don't have the firewire option :( I can attest to the fact that the Pre's record drums very well. Very clean and low low noise with nice headroom.

I read a while back the mac drivers were not all that good at the time so make sure you get the latest ones.

The only other thing though is the EQ is post pre which means that you can't record EQ settings.
Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

awesome, thanks for the opinion on it. I don't think I really mind not recording the EQ.. I'd prpbably go plug in anyway for that. Thanks for the little note 'bout the mac drivers too. I've been reading exactly that and will make sure I have the latest when using the machine. Anyone else? on the firewire end?
