NEW TAKE in DP6?

Post by dpdan »

can anyone confirm that there is a way to change many audio tracks to a "new take", without having to change every stinkin' track?

Thanks folks, I'm still waiting for my ship notification for DP6.

You have to set that up with Track Grouping.

Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. I haven't checked that out yet in DP6. Don't know if it's the same or not. In DP5 you do it with Track Grouping.

If you hit ctrl+alt+N you get at new take on all tracks in record mode. If you hit ctrl+alt+arrowup/down you will change take on tracks that are in record.

Dan, if you're wanting 'new take' to apply to a bunch of selected tracks, then no, DP 6 doesn't do that - unless I'm missing something (wouldn't be the first time).

As in DP 5, you can switch takes on multiple tracks if those tracks are in a custom track group, and you've checked off 'add or delete take' in the custom track group options window. Unfortunately, you can't assign a key command to this. I've sent requests for this to the suggestion box, but no dice so far.

The key commands Kaspar mentions can be helpful, but they only apply to record-enabled tracks.

Similarly, I'd like to be able to send a bunch of tracks to the same aux bus, by having bus assignments included in the 'audio assignments' window. I've requested this too, and I don't see why it'd be that hard to implement. It could save a lot of time on large-track-count projects.

In Pro Tools, you can assign all mixer tracks to the same aux send by holding down option when you select the send for one track. It's very convenient for large projects when you want to send most of the tracks to, say, a reverb.

Sorry to go a little OT, but it got me thinking of the theme 'applying common tasks to a bunch of tracks.'

If tracks are selected, hold down T and choose "New Take" or switch to a different take in any track, and all the rest will follow suit.

If tracks aren't selected, hold down W and do the same thing.

This is presupposing that you've set up temporary track groups from the Groups window mini-menu and accompanying dialog box.

I tested both. They work.

Just tried these, and when I select 'Set temporary group type', nothing happens.

EDIT: Quit DP 6. Tried it in DP 5.13 - when I selected 'Set temporary group type', the group options window opened right away. Re-launched DP 6 - this time the Set Temporary Group Type' window opened the second or third time I tried to call it up. Weird.

Thanks, Shooshie!

Holytaco! You just made my day. I've looked 100 times trying to figure out how to do that. Never realized you needed temporary groups on.

thanx!!!!!!!

hmm .. i can't get that HOLD DOWN T thing to work ..

I've known about the track grouping and key commands.
I actually changed "new take" to COMMAND / SHIFT / Zero on the calculator / keypad in the commands page ..
its more ergonomic and easier to hit with one free hand.

But .. i can't seem to get that T & W option to work ..
can someone explain that to me in greater detail ..
P-P-please :)
I created a group and set a temporary group details.
and i've tried to highlight and choose T and my cursor jumps around irratically and always selects rename take rather than new take or a previous take ..
I tried with no tracks selected in the tracks window and holding down W but nothing happens to the other tracks ..
maybe i'm doing something wrongs .. HeLp hehe
i suspended the group i created too .. to see if that made a diff ..

DO you have a conflict with the T key? You might look through your Commands window and see if any of them use the T. I just checked it again to be sure I wasn't imagining things, and it did most definitely work.

T = Selected Tracks Temporary Group
W = Visible tracks Temporary Group. (visible includes those scrolled offscreen)

Same here, the cursor always jumps to "Rename Take", cause if you hit a key in a pulldown-menu, the cursor always jumps to that letter or the alphabetic nearest one, so I don´t know how this should work...but it would be fantastic - perhaps something in the preferences that is different ?

Mine is a little erratic also........ but just do this:

Select your tracks

Hold down T, or W

Click on Take number

Let your cursor go whereever, and then just use the up and down arrow keys to select the choice you want (while keeping the T or W pressed down).
