OK, I've downloaded it and no go.
From the app iteslf:
"Data Rescue focuses on data recovery as opposed to hard drive repair."

It does more than just focus on it; it completely omits any sort of (even minor) repair.
Bummer.

Data Rescue does a different thing, as you've discovered. It just tries to get your data back, it doesn't even try to fix your drive. It's good for the right situation because sometimes you can't fix the drive, but you can get some of your data back. Your data will not even be named properly when your done. It's more of an emergency tool.

Sorry if it didn't work for ya MM. When I used the demo, after a few times, it woke up the HD, and I was able to copy over about 3gigs manually to another drive.
YMMV, it may have been a fluke.

Aha! OK, I'll try a couple of dummy extractions anyway then.

Thank you Tonio. :D

Hey MM,
stupid, random thought here... I wonder if popping the drive into an external case, usb-sata, would help at all. I'm just thinking on an off chance it might change something, and let you access the disc.... I wouldn't spend money on a case though... unless, you might want an extra external for b/u. Hey, here's a cheaper idea... have you tried pulling out the drive, give it a restart with just the boot drive, shut down, and then reinstall the drive in a different bay... probably won't help, just a thought... good luck, keep us posted....

+1 on stupid random thought. Have you tried simply unplugging the HD and replug the cable? I suppose it would be slide i/o for a MAC PRO eh?
Could be a bugger in there mate?

T

p.s. do primates like i/o? Me thinks so :D

Well, the only dummy was me, and I was doing the extracting.

Managed to extract an empty folder, that's all.
Unfortunately this didn't seem to affect the drive's recognisability.

No fellas, I haven't tried removing the drive yet, rebooting, shutting down and reinstalling it; that'll be close to a last resort, but the time is edging closer.
The thing is, especially now that my shoulder and hip are shot to bits and practically unusable, even removing the Mac from my rack is going to require an evening and I'm not sure I can even do it.

FWIW, the popup screen appears again no when I boot up.
Also, FWIMBW, here's the ScanEngineLog from the data recovery app:

Nicky, you really should try Disk Warrior. It has saved a couple of disks of mine in the past- a real miracle worker. Of course, there's also been a couple that she couldn't save.

Fair call, Brett; I've heard nothing but good things said about DW, unlike TTP.

I cannot purchase anything online yet, but I'll give Streetwise or New Wave Systems a call.
Hope it's dirt cheap man; as a strict rule, I do not buy software, MOTU and Apple excepted.

Nicky, I'm not sure that you'll find it "dirt cheap" but if you have some other Mac users in your local area who have it, maybe they can help you out. If you can boot up your Mac in Target Mode and hook it to their Mac, you can get to the disk and have them try DW on it.

Short of that, I know it's difficult to open the wallet for a utility that you might use once, but then again it all depends on whether the data on that disk is valuable.

Thank you Billy.

Yeah, it's times like these that I wish I knew other Mac users and music makers.
Actually, I always wish I knew other Mac users and music makers - that's why I'm here at da 'Nation.

You've got me wondering though whether or not I should just bite the bullet and remove the drive and do the reboot and reinstall boogie.
At this point I'm probably better off sorting this quickly, even if it means wiping the drive and reloading it with a slightly older (and copied as opposed to original) version of its contents.
Heck, if I could access the erase feature of DU I'd do it now, but alas, I'm locked out.

Confused and grateful, man. :?

Nicky, is there a computer shop you can take the drive to? Chances are, they will have something like Disk Warrior and can easily fix your drive. From your description, I really do think its just a corrupt drive header file and not an actual failed drive. I'd hate to see you lose all the files if all it needs is to have the drive's header file repaired. Of course, taking it to the shop will probably cost as much, or more, than buying DW. :(

Ha! Thank you Brian; therein lies the snare:

I've had a faulty mouse and audio output since I bought the machine; I replaced the mouse through the mail but it broke again 3 weeks later, so I figured I'd wait 'till I could get to a store (maybe by taxi!) as I'd need to take the Mac in anyway.
So here I am, 7 months later, still listening to this crappy Mac speaker 'cause I don't even have line outs, and I'm honestly no closer to getting this thing off to a store (it's gonna cost me an arm, literally LOL).

A fellow 'Cornie has offered to lend me his DW copy, just for this one occasion, so that could well fix things.
Fingers crossed; I'll report back when I've downloaded DW (which could take a while - I've no idea how big it is yet).

Thank you to all who've tried to help lil' ol' me.
While I'm at it:
Thank you very, very much to the kind-hearted 'Cornie (aren't we all?) who's so graciously offered the loan - you know who you are.

OK. I've now tried every apparent option in DW, and the drive's identified as:

"...a whole bunch of character gibberish, followed by [not available]"

Not good, methinks. This drive's only had data copied to it less than a dozen times.
Seems mighty odd for a WD with a 3 year warranty, plus this is the first glitch I've ever experienced with a WD.

Thank you again to the 'Cornie who leant me the app.
