Mackie Onyx 32.4 started this AM making noises

Post by buzzsmith »

Hi, everyone.

Below are the posts and 1 response I got from the Mackie forum...

Hi, all!

Turned on the Onyx 32.4 this morning and was greeted with intermittent popping, clicking, and some hissing!

Primarily in the right channel, shows up on the meters and seems to be confined to the Monitor Out (when I switch the Genelec monitors to the Group Outs, it's quiet)

All faders down, all FX returns down. It was pretty actively noisy for quite a while when I powered it on then seemed to settle down.

Now, after 4 hours or so, it's sporadically noisy and with less duration about every 10 minutes.

Got a big session this weekend (only use the Onyx for monitoring...I don't record through it) so I'm working on a Grouping work-around that will include verb return and headphone sends for the players and me.

Any ideas on what's happening?

Thanks!

Buzzy

Sounds like it could be a bad capacitor, a bad solder joint, or a bad internal connection.

That's what I'm thinking, too, Mike.

I'm sitting in the studio now with the board now on about 8 hours and I still hear random little pops more and more infrequently, though.

And I know Mackie always mentions "Save the box!", and, of course, I can't locate it right now to send it back to 'em for warranty repair.

I'll call them tomorrow and see what the next step is.

Thanks for your insight.

Buzzy

Anyone here in the expert forum have an opinion, as well?

Thanks!
