purchasing new dp system

Post by bleached04 »

hey guys. im considering purchasing a dp system (im a former pro tools user who is sick of digidesign). my setup as i think now would be a dual 2.0ghz g5 with the 896hd. would this interface be my best bet for the price. i would like to eventually expand to 16ins at a time. also, can i bypass the preamps on this converter or am i stuck with using them. how are the preamps by the way? also, whats the difference in the regular dp 4.5 and the competitive advantage version? thanks for any info.

I can answer the bit about the competitive advantage version as I just purchased it. I migrated from Logic 7 (which unfortunately cant handle OMF or XML audio import from FCP) and so was entitled to purchase the significantly less expensive competitive upgrade. The answer to your question is that there is no difference at all - it is the full version including full hardcopy of the manuals and full functionality. Alll you gotta do to be eligible is to have a competing audio DAW. Once you get the upgrade you fax or email a copy of your invoice and a copy of the front page of the manual of the competing DAW and MOTU (very promptly I might add) send you your registration number.

By the way - DP4 is great. Very stable for me and good for film work.

Can you wait until April 16 to buy the G5? Moore's Law makes it so there is never a good time to buy, but I just saw this unsubstantiated rumor that says new PowerMacs may be announced at that time.

thanks for the (possible) tip off. I was just about to uprgrade from my dual processor G4 (which has served me except for the massive noise from the fans which sound like a harrier jet taking off) but will definitely wait.

I would get a dual 2.5 or if a 3.0 comes along now in April since you are used to the immediate response. I have used PT a lot and at the time DP is not far from it when it comes to stability.

As for service Motu is a giant compared to Digidesign.
