I was dismayed that the average viewer could not have cared less. They didn't even realize anything different about the music. How do I know this? I watched one of the episodes at my father-in-law's house. My girlfriend's sisters were all there. They kept talking, offering us drinks, giving us food, chatting, etc. So the TV was on, but just as background noise. Occasionally they looked at the TV, made a comment on an actor, and went back to chatting.

Sadly, this is how most families watch TV. It is there, in the center of the living-room, but just as background noise. When they show tv ads, they always take advantage of that moment to go to the bathroom, get some pop-corn, or whatever.

any stock-music library, or loops or whatever will suffice. From the average listener/viewer's POV, this may be so. But what about us, the composers and creators of music? What about artistry? Does that mean that we should not care anymore and give up and compose bad music, and just be concerned about cashing our royalties checks in the bank? Or should we ignore that and do our best anyway?
What do you think? These are not rhetorical questions, BTW. I'm genuinly interested in reading about your views.

This has probably always been true. There were some exceptions of course. During the 1960's people actually sat down to listen to record albums for example, Sgt. Peppers shook the world, and Warhol was a household name, but for the most people music and art is some background filler. Art (however one wishes to define the term) sometimes coincides with commerce (e.g. entertainment), but it often takes a back seat to the desires of those who are financing any given production/publication/presentation. How many TV series, movies, songs on the top 40 chart, posters that sell in Wal-Mart, best-selling books, etc. are largely considered "art?" OTOH, why do we find "art" in specialized museums and concert halls? Then again, art is the one thing that has a chance of becoming famous long after the artist, and the people in his/her time, have left this mortal coil.

The best thing one can do is make music that moves you, and if most others don't pay attention, then it is their loss.
