Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
I'm now thinking about keeping my G4 for MIDI Audio and getting a G5 1.8 single P. Using some MIDI/LAN program to network them and putting all VI's on the G5. Anybody doing this? Any thoughts and comments are welcome, jump right in.
I was going for a G5 DP2.5 but after reading all the comprimises people are still making this other route seems worth looking into.

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
I have a G5 2.5 AND a G4. I too would like to network using LAN....let's hope some experts start telling us what they know about this! Even a G5 2.5 needs a G4 for back up
Mac Pro (Late 2013
2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5

Mojave
DP 10.13
MOTU 8pre, MTP AV, 828 mkII
Tons of VIS and plug ins. SSD hard drives etc

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Hi guys, I'm no expert, but I'm using MIDIoverlan CP which works great for me. It can network pcs and macs together and it is very simple to use. My suggestion is to try it since it is also very cheap.

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
I have MIDI over LAN CP with a PC P$ an Apple G4 Desktop and an iBook. Fantastic very low latency feel like I have acheived long sort after dream very tight and all over a wireless network!
One slight issue is that the audio breaks up on the PC when the wireless network sends out a data packet of some sort. Now I tend to get this more noticeably with NI stuff FM7 and reaktor session not to bad with battery seems a lot less problematic with Gigastudio but to me this is not an issue and in particular not bewtween the 2 macs
I have been overjoyed at sharing the load ,simple stress free tight MIDI with USB ports getting the benefit of hands on controllers instead.

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Hello,
Wasn't mLAN from Yamaha supposed to handle multi-instruments over a network; with mLAN, it is accomplished over FireWire instead of ethernet.

What about using a new Mac Mini as a sampler/playback MIDI device (such as Mach5 only running on the Mini)?

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Bob, I think there was a thread here on MacMinis. Basically they have a 5400 HD and not much room for a lot of RAM. I don't lnow much else, and haven't read those links yet.
Thanks everyone for the info.
Let's keep it going.
What are some shell programs that will accept MIDI clock, so that tempo dependant VI's like Stylus RMX will sync up. V Stack won't do it. Music Labs seems to have the MIDI/LAN thing together.

Does MIDI Over LAN work on a regular network, with a router, multiple computers, internet, etc?Originally posted by Jaime Lunn:

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Glad to hear it works. I'm only half way there...perhaps you can give me a hint. I've got communication between my mac and pc (things light up in the MIDI monitor windows). However, I can't seem to find it anywhere within DP. The MidioverLAN CP driver shows up in my Audio MIDI Setup, but I have no idea how to trigger it from DP. I can't select it as a MIDI device on any track.
Any help would be great.
Rob

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Bobinspcae- the MOLCP driver in Audio MIDI set up is a MIDI interface you can use the config app that comes with it and ask it to show connections then just create your external devices and name them whatever. Then in DP they will show up and be available. I have them named as Pentium Synth and Mac Synth then on the respective computers you can set up as many of the sixteen ports as you want. I only use one on each at the moment.
Sure hardwired network or wireless, I was amazed at how tight it was on a wireless! I route everything into my 828mkll for monitoring and recording.

Re: Anybody doing MIDI/LAN networking?
Jaime....
Your solution worked. Awesome, thank you. The problem was that I hadn't created any devices to connect to the interface, which seem like an obvious thing to do, but since the whole thing set-up is so "virtual", I couldn't get my head around it. I don't have it working in giga yet, but the monitor lights work on the PC, so I just have to configure the giga and I should be off to the races.
Thanks again,
Rob

MIDI and audio via ethernet. Right now it's Windows OS only, but they're working on Mac compatibility.Originally posted by jimmy330:

Imagine having a dozen slave computers (cheap PCs thrown together from Fry's parts) hosting VIs and plugins that are all accessed by the main machine/daw. And as far as the DAW knows, they're all in the main computer.
I can't see something like this not happening for Mac......I guess it kind of is with Logic's DAP.

Tim, thanks, didn't know about that one, was watching Worm Hole, but they don't have MIDI yet.
