Amazing Real Time Pitch Shifter

Post by Eleventh Hour Sound »

And you already own it!

Thanks to the guys who have mentioned the built in (free) Apple Pitch Shift plug in.

I had an acoustic guitar track that fell apart when I used Melodyne to transpose it down 2 semi tones, so I was going to leave it out of the song.

I was browsing the plug ins and tried the Apple Pitch shift and it sounds absolutely perfect. The only thing I tweaked was I kicked up the tightness to 100% (we always want that right?)

Now I'm gonna try it on some of the other tracks that had turned out less than steller in Melodyne.

The ultimate Group Buy. It's Free!, you already bought it! <Grin>

Oh, one question: Am I correct to think each semi tone is 100 cents?

Yes. :D

And yes, it's saved my neck a few times as well. Quite remarkable little plug.

Yeah, I've been repeatedly surprised at how well this plugin works, especially for the (lack of) price. Very useable.

Yeah, I use it to bring bands who tune flat (van halen, smithereens to name a couple) up to standard pitch for practicing. Since I generally practice with my ipod, I bring the ipod in on a track in Jambalaya, put the pitch shift effect on it to bring it to standard pitch, and save that with the song so I can always just plug and practice - its just part of my set list.

Very useful.

Cool reminder!

Still, I'm curious - when you say you had a problem with Melodyne, was it the Plug-In or "regular" Melodyne?

I have both the plug in and Studio. Melodyne did fine on the bass and vocals but butchered the very percussive rhythm acoustic guitar track (unless I committed massive user error which is entirely possible.) There were also a lot of artifacts on the busy Triton keyboard pad.

I was considering re-recording the guitar and keyboard when I remembered reading that someone recommended Apple's Pitch Shift. I was amazed at how transparently I was able to transpose down 2 semitones. Then I ran the keyboard through it and also had very good results.

That's why it's so great that we own our own studios :)

Yep Apple Plugs rules.
I was scared to use them at first (having the mentality that if it comes with OS it MUST suck) but I got surprised by the Pitch and the Reverb.

I found a glitch where it glitches (as if it's overloaded) during the first bar of material. Then it smoothes out. I can live with that. Some time I need some time in the mornings before I start processing smoothly :)
