MOTU says they know about the squeal!
I spoke with both Sweetwater and MOTU tech support yesterday and they each confirmed that the squeal is a known issue. Accorrding to MOTU they are working on a firmware update to fix it. All they said was, "It will be soon", no time line. V1.05 made no difference for me.
In the mean time I sit and wait and hope that I don't through my new equipment against the wall

you are luck t least you got a response from tech support.
I icreated a techlink on their website on the 23-5-08 and have had no response i then emailed customer care who said
"Thank you for writing.
We have been unable to locate an account currently registered with your email address. If you have a TechLink posted which remains unread, please feel free to submit your name and MTL number so that we can notify Technical Support.
Kind regards,

But still no response. I really wish they could confirm its a known issue and they are working on it but to say nothing well it makes me wonder.
I have a mk1 mk2 and now mk3 but after this experience i wont own a mk4.

oh (days later)...now I get it! hahaJames Steele wrote:MOTU and Ned Beatty.
This squeel thing btw is the bane of my existence. I have the audio/MIDI setup app as a mouse hot key so I can toggle my output between 828mk2 and built in audio. That allows me to play at least one item from the finder through the 828. Reseting the 828 is just a short lived temporary fix I've found. Motu tech support completely ignored me.

I'm hoping when I go to leopard 10.5.3 (w DP 5.13) and update my motu drivers it will disappear. please...god...make it disappear.

You can go to the MOTU website and download the new drivers and frimware for the 828 MK3. From my testing this weekend it seems the new drivers and firmware update are working to get rid of the squeal.
Give it a try,
Earl

I downloaded the firmware update a week ago and it made no difference what so ever. I'm still on 10.5.2 though. Have you gone to 10.5.3?earldrum wrote:Hi CCrane:ccrane wrote:Motu tech support completely ignored me.![]()

Sorry... I enjoy seeing just how cryptic a joke I can make and still have somebody get it. Ned Beatty was the actor in the early 70s movie called "Deliverance." He co-starred with John Voight and Burt Reynolds. Hopefully that will be enough of a hint, because it's a rather unpleasant reference.Robbie_2327 wrote:I'm still lostccrane wrote:oh (days later)...now I get it! hahaJames Steele wrote:MOTU and Ned Beatty.
Thanks about the guitar. Oddly that Razorback is flashy and gets some notice, but it's a cheap import. I have a custom USA V and ML, both signed by Dean Zelinsky that play better and are more expensive, but they are sans Floyd Rose and I need that for some songs. I also bought a Razorback V with the same color scheme. I installed a Hipshot "Tremsetter" on it though, as the tendency of Floyd Rose type bridges to "give" when bending strings drove me nuts!! Bend a note and all the other strings go flat.

Thanks Earl, I have the 828Mk2 so I downloaded just the driver update, but unfortunately no difference, though Ned would be very happy =)earldrum wrote:Hi CCrane:

I am on OS 10.4.7 and DP 5.1 still due to a Waves issue, but in about a week should be on Leopard 10.5.3 and DP 5.13. Maybe I will have more success then.
I was starting to think it might be a 828mk2 hardware issue though the 828mk3 apparently has (had? after firmware update) the same problem.
A hard reset of the 828mk2 temporarily solves the problem which makes me think that a firmware update of the 828mk2 is in need. Or perhaps a swift kick.
btw, my 828mk2 is at firmware 1.01. - which does seem kind of low, though I don't see anything on the web or Motu's site about a later version.
Also perhaps it is possible that the firewire Glyph drive I have attached to the other 828 FW port is not helping matters.
But you got me inspired to try and tackle this again. After a little web scouring some one suggested switching to the other FW port in addition to the reset.
I've just done that and all is good...at the moment, been here before! I will post an update. thanks again.

Hmmm..this sounds very cool indeed! What a great idea, thanks for the info

PS to James 'Dean', what an amazingly cool and informative resource and community UnicorNation is. As a long time StudioVisionPro and Protools user and recent (just a few years) DP user this sight is becoming my new favorite past time. And I can safely say it is productive as well. Thanks dude!

I have my Glyph attached to my iMac and I have wondered about it as well. The only thing I have seemed to find that helps is doing this... turn on 828 then Glyph then iMac then reboot iMac. This makes no sense to me yet the 828 seems to work better thenccrane wrote:Also perhaps it is possible that the firewire Glyph drive I have attached to the other 828 FW port is not helping matters.

I just saw the new firmware update is out!!! I'm at work now so I can't download it to see if it fixes the problem.
Has anyone tried it yet?

New drivers and firmware for 828 MK3
On June 19th, I downloaded the firmware update and new drivers from the MOTU site and have not experienced the squeal since that update. Hopefully, this fix will be exactly waht the 828 MK3 needed to fix the squeal for good.earldrum wrote: You can go to the MOTU website and download the new drivers and frimware for the 828 MK3.
