GO the iMac. It has much faster specs and ram etc but above all else the days of the PPC are numbered.

Already there are rumours floating about that the next OS (rumoured to be called snow leopard) will not have PPC support.

it is only time b4 supports dries up IMHO.

But if you do decide to buy a G5 don't buy a first generation one as there were many problems with those. Try and get a last generation if you can.

Well hang there bunky...

OTOH, you may be able to find a killer deal on a PPC or even and Intel G5 system that will be fine for a few years. By the time it is "outdated" the new machines will be way faster.

If you are experiencing slowdowns and OS issues a used G5 might be just the ticket - as long as it is reliable and tested and the HD and RAM are good. I'm still on an "old" G5 and it handles everything I throw at it. I also seriously doubt Apple is going to ditch PPC users in the next OS. It may be "native" to Intel machines, but surely it will somehow run on older machines.

Most companies wait at least 7 years after production to make a system "obsolete" and even then, they are cautious in doing so as to not loose their user base.

I've read the rumors and they are just that - rumors. They are easy to start so I'll start one here: Apple is NOT going to make 10.6 incompatible with PPC G5's or similar machines. If they do, I'll eat my mustard greens!

lol... I agree with part of your statement... a G5 may serve the original poster's needs better than an imac...

However... apple's track record of support is UNDER 7 years...
Take for example a PPC 800 MHz laptop. Last produced in 2002, no longer supported under Lep...as of Oct of 07. Don't hold your breath (or eat anything nasty) for continued support. May be a moot point anyway... YMMV...

Damn, I was just forced to upgrade to Intel when my 2x2G5 up-and-died, and let me tell you, I'm not looking back. Granted, I upgraded to an 8-core Xeon, but holy cow, this is a different computing experience altogether!

So I'm not so sure if I would counsel anyone to buy a used G5 anymore...

agreed

my "old" d2.3 ppc chugs pretty much without fail no matter what i do

i know there will come a day for it to be retired, but for now i'm running 10.4.11 and the livin is easy

my only advice would be to get all the ram you can
