Post by jeff sanders »

hello group,
i dont mean to beat a dead horse but concerning the various issues with the new 828mk3 squealing, cutting out etc. could osx versions give insight to why some setups are affected and others not?

please consider posting your osx version along with any arisen issues or lack of. this may indicate an avenue for focusing our troubleshooting efforts.

im imac 24"(white plastic case), tiger 10.4.11 and havent had squeal or cut outs[quickly knocks on wood].

OSX 10.4 & 10.5 Both Give Dropouts with 828

Post by williamm »

Jeff,

I get dropouts (but not squeals) with my 828 Classic and Intel MacBook Pro when running OSX 10.4.11. Same defect when running OSX 10.5.3. This using AudioDesk 2.11 and FireWire 1.4.7 from MOTU. Luckily, my G4 Cube continues to work as it always has. System log includes this line after dropouts:

/SourceCache/AppleFWOHCI/AppleFWOHCI-2910.4.0/AppleFWOHCI.cpp 3506: ERROR: FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8025 built-in: handleUnrecoverableErrorInt

No dropouts or squeal. MacPro 10.5.3. Nothing else on the firewire usually, though I have read in video from my camcorder a couple of times with no ill effects.

10.4.11 G5 Dual 2.3mhz
No problems with the MK2 but Squeals with the mk3.
I have two older firewire drives Ice Cubes they are called.
I have disconnected these a couple of time and have not had the issue but they are my audio drives and sample library so i cant go for weeks without them. Also the problem is so random that it could be a coincidence.
In the next 2 weeks i will replace them with an internal drive and hopefully the problem goes away.

For me it seems like the order in which I turn things on seems to effect whether my mkIII sqeuals or not. I will turn my HD and 828 on first then my iMac then I reboot the iMac. I know this seems weird but for some reason then the mkIII seems to work better that way (of course since I'm writting this post it will probably stop working for me now)

I'm running 10.5.2 and I have my external HD hooked-up to the FW800 port

At times I've had so much squealling that I almost couldn't get any work done. It would sqeual every 3 to 10 minutes. That is really annoying. Then on Friday night I went about 6 hours and I think it only squealled once, go figure.

I'm begining to wonder if I should start to read the daily horoscopes for my 828 to try and figure out whether I should work on music that day or not

Hi All:

I have a 2.7 GHz, dual processor, G5 running OS X 10.4.11. I am using my second 828 MK3 since March 08 (the first one went back to MOTU). I have updated the firmware to 1.05 and have the current drivers. BTW, I do not have any firewire ports in use other than the 828. I do have wireless internet connected that is on all the time. Someone somewhere on some forum said to disconnect Airport connection; I have not tried this action yet, but it could happen soon.

Anyhow the squeal is very intermitten, but most days it shows up at some point. I would love to know if there is secret sequence for starting up the 828 MK3 and the Mac. I will try that trick really soon and hope it works. I given up on calling MOTU tech support since getting the new MK3 ... I don't think they can help me and I get too worked up about this kind of problem ... not calling is better for my blood pressure and my feelings about MOTU tech support, who have been great until the 828 MK3 was released.

Also I love the sound of the 828 MK3 compared to my old trusty, faithful, never had a problem 828 MK1. But now with the new MK3 you never know when the squeal will come and ruin a take, blow out my tweeters in my speakers, or blow out my ears. Maybe I should have Black Lion upgrade my 828? Then it might sound like my MK3 ... but I like new CUEMIX as well ... so I probably won't do that upgrade.

Lastly, I really hope new drivers and firmware come our before the DP 6.0 upgrade or another new audio interface like the Traveler MK2 is released! This problem should be a top priority for MOTU.

I'll check in again in a week or so and find out if any of us found the secret to stopping the squeal.

Regards,

:D

i been rereading these post and see no correlation between os versions or comp types so far. i tried with and without airport on without issue.

one thing i did not mention was im using the the analog 1-2 out to feed my monitors and not the main outs 1-2. could this be an indicator why im trouble free? i have no low impedance inputs on my monitors or speakers to try. those with issues may consider trying to recreate problems using the analog outs instead of mains to eliminate them as a source. i understand the low are better than high for recording and should work without causing problems but until a patch or whatever, it may increase your production by lessoning headaches.
again good luck

Hi Jeff:

There are new drivers and firmware available for the MOTU 828 MK3. Hopefully this will fix the problems.

FireWire 1.4.8 Doesn't Fix Dropouts

Post by williamm »

Jeff,

I just installed the new FireWire driver update 1.4.8, and still get dropouts with a MOTU 828 Classic and my Intel MacBook Pro, running OSX 10.4.11 and AudioDesk 2.11.

mark,
dang, i dont know how to find my driver version. my cuemix says 1.0.2 and my interface shows 1.06 on power up. i know we got different hardware so thats probably why. to be honest i havent tried recording since downloading and updating those two files.

forgive this in case you know but have you ran permissions yet? just to rule that out. power cycle all gear, comp etc.

ill post again after doing some recording tests.
good luck

Jeff,

I haven't run permissions recently. Thanks for the reminder. If you run a program called "MOTU Audio Setup" which is probably in your Applications folder, the General tab shows the driver version near the bottom of the window.

yep found it. thanx im 1.4.8 too

another guy posted(other thread) still having drops after new updates

i have noticed my computers sound, itunes, internet, quicktime etc. are now more balanced(not way louder then exts like before) with my external sound modules, dmpro, hpd15, volume levels, since update. for what its worth.

heres a dumb idea to check to see if it is comp components sleeping that wreaks havoc. try moving the mouse every four minutes while using the mk3 to see if that stops the drops. i have all my sleep stuff, animated stuff, daskboard, mouse etc. set to not happen.

grabbing at straws here like a last resort
good luck
