My 2x2G5 up-and-died, and instead of sinking lots of $$ for a new logic board and/or processor into a first-gen G5, I'm getting an 8-core 2.88 tomorrow.
My plan for now is to install my old HD with all my music software into slot 3 (slot 1 has the factory-installed OS on it, slot 2 an empty SATA drive.) Then I'll update the old HD in slot 3 from 10.4.11 to Leopard (which the new 8-cores apparently require), and then restart from the updated HD and see if everything works (yes, I know the NI plugs will require updating the licenses...)
On its way is the MOTU PCIe 424 card, to replace the old PCI 424.
Any warnings/ thoughts/ insights/ tips re. the whole migration? Thanks!!!
I wouldn't do this, Kubi. In fact, I didn't. Migrating from a PPC to an Intel really should only be concerned with documents and files, not applications or executable code. You're just asking for trouble. And if you get it, trouble-shooting is gonna be a real PITA.
Also, your old system drive is partitioned using the wrong flavour for Intel booting – it needs to be GUID but it's actually APM at the moment.
I bit this bullet and I'm really glad I did. My Mac Pro is organised exactly the way my G4 SHOULD have been and I've never had a single problem with it. The new machines are so fast that the process should take only a couple of hours. If you have NI Komplete, add another day or so for sorting that mess out.
My advice is to start with a blank slate.
Good luck with the new machine!
Kind regards.

as usual David is totally correct ,new mac needs hd setup with Macintel compliant software.if things were setup for PPC and not Macintel you could have major issues.

Well, I have my original install DVDs etc. handy in a box and all my update installers stored on an external hard drive, together with a list of serial numbers, user IDs etc. Plus I got a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in the fridge, a decently speedy cable connection humming, and a nice soft pillow to sit on... off we go!
Not a bad way to spend the weekend... (he said, suddenly realizing he had indeed turned the corner to bonafide geekdom a long, long time ago...)

I forgot what the request was.
This case of Nounitis I have seems to be spilling over into phrase territory.

I can't help but wonder whether or not this was the trigger for this:
