I've been using my G4 iMac speakers as my "crap detector" during final mix and mastering sanity checking, but my understanding is that the Avantones will give me a truer cross-section of all of the crappy playback systems in use . I have simply been holding out for the availability of the active pair.
Some criticise the Avantones for not being EXACTLY like the old Auratones, but they put a lot of thought into the design and deliberately modified the original Auratone response to match what they feel is more "current" for low-end listening vs. what was current twenty years ago.

Well, I had my own dedicated forum site for awhile---but I just didn't have the time to manage the spam, monitor the back-end, etc. I try to keep my own website going, but my plans never can seem to move forward as doing HTML code takes awhile and if I'm going to do it---I want it to look good. It's much easier to plug into a forum and just "type" whenever I have the time or wherever I might be. I think I am going to have to be forced to get back into my own forum again which is here:
Thanks for the feedback. I used to double-check my mixes on a set of Auratones at a studio I worked at years ago, but have never had anything like them in my home studio. I always do a quick bounce to CD and then try it on as many different systems (crappy to fantastic) that I can get my hands on. I thought it would be nice to have something like the Avantones with their lo-fi, non-crossover sound and was wondering if the amp on the active ones made much of a difference. Given the "purpose" of those monitors, I guess that may have been a bit of faulty logic. Again, thanks for the feedback!

I'm still not sure though whether it makes more sense to get one vs. two, and set up the Aventone for a mono sum test? Given the purpose, is it better to use them for checking imaging at the low end of speaker quality, or just spectrum/etc.?

Hanging on every word here.
I've not been able to afford a "proper" stereo yet, and have just one system to check things on.
The speakers cost $10. Let's just say that they're "unique" sounding, but not representative of the current trends.
I've no monitor controller, but expect a parallel routing of the main bus in DP out to a discreet pair on a 24I/O would suffice, especially if there's some sort of trim control on these puppies.
I'd have to be a prime candidate for something like this you'd think, given that I have no access to any other system. Please, carry on 'Cornies...

I think they are sold as a pair....
Thank you,
