Clearly Alan and everyone here has tried every permutation without success. I can only suggest that we all write to MOTU and hopefully with enough e-mails they will look again at the driver situation.
The irony is I only bought an 828 because of MOTU's reputation for quality and its supreme compatibility with Apple Mac computers. I shall be pointing this out to MOTU when I write to them.
Come on everyone, Lets get 'em....
That does seem like the only option really!
I'll be putting together an email after I've finished with my studio session for the day.
I even tried a Vanilla (completely new) install of Leopard on my Mac with the only other non-Apple software being the MOTU 1.4.7 driver. It still wouldn't play a song in iTunes.

yep i did the same!
definitely a ppc issue.
i really didn't like the hassle of downgrading to 10.4
so many problems with messed up permissions on folders and broken system bits.
Actually, on advice from my techie chappie, I'm gonna dump the 828 altogether and go for an RME interface, ferociously expensive, but I'm in the middle of a couple of programmes right now and can't afford the time. He was also warning that updated drivers may well take months to come about.
So I wish you all well and hope the situation resolves itself soon.

heh, i mentioned to MOTU that they might start losing customers if they don't sort the driver out.
Right, just spent many hours with my techie trouble shooting the 828, and the result is, it works fine with my MacBook Pro (intel) which runs 10.5 but no joy with the G5 10.5.2. We have narrowed the problem down to the MIDI driver that comes with the Motu install software. Although we can physically see that it has installed properly, Applications>library>audio>MIDI drivers, the G5 will not 'see' it and for some reason disables all audio and MIDI functionality. So yes it works on my laptop but my main work computer is the G5, so sadly its back to the shop for the 828....

my support request is still on going with their tech support team... the latest they've tried to tell me, is that my usb ports aren't working properly.
no... if think you'll find it's the driver that isn't compatible with G5 PPC and 10.5...
i wish they'd just accept that... i have told them about a dozen times now
I am experiencing similar difficulties with my iMac G5. Everything was smooth until I upgraded it to 10.5.3 (with 1.4.7 drivers). Audio functions OK and Logic 8 has no issues recognising my MkII. Standalone VI's such as Battery 3.0.4 work fine as well.
But the clincher is that the Audio/MIDI console in 10.5.3 won't playback my external hardware synths and seems to freeze a bit too often.
This was all great in 10.4.11, by the way, so I would agree that its a driver problem related to G5 PPC Macs.
Anyone got news on a fix? New driver update? Go back to 10.4.11?

for the moment i'd advise to go back to 10.4... however... if you don't want to lose 10.5, then partition your drive and install 10.4 on the new partition.
MOTU really seem to be just ignoring this issue and rubbishing any comments to do with the problems with the driver for 10.5.
It's really annoying and completely irresponsible of them to act like this, when there is obviously such a big issue being talked about!
As of yet, I've had no impression that they're doing anything to fix the issue, or even accept that there is a problem.
Yes... it's the PPC/G5 + 1.4.7 driver combination that does not work.
Intel Macs of any flavour work fine.
Don't think we will ever see a fix for this. Even Apple are dropping PPC support in Snow Leopard (the next major OS upgrade).
