Mix down trouble

Post by mattsearles »

As far as I know I'm doing everything right.. but when I go to bounce to disk.. the resultant files have no audio in them, why could this be?

I've new to DP 5.. didn't have this problem with the last version I was working with.. DP 4.. but a certain amount has changed since then.. for instance I've gone from a PowerMac G4 to one of the 8 Core Mac Pros.. And I'm working with the latest version of Komplete from Native Instruments.. and Kore..

I have an old school motu 828.. but mostly I'm just monitoring without any sound card / interface.. on head phones, direct from the Mac Pro..

As near as I can tell there's a bug somewhere with the problem.. but I'm green enough with DP that I can't rule out that I might be the bug.. still.. I wonder if this is some sort of a known problem.. and not just me.. or if anything in my above mentioned configuration triggers any read flags.

Anyway, thanks for any help anyone can give.

how long does the bounce take? do you have other audio soundbites?
may seem obvious but are you rendering all the soft instruments and selecting the whole sequence before the bounce?
why don't you use the 828 with multiple inputs /outputs and mice pre's?
that's where i'd start.

Just to make sure... Have you selected the audio you want to bounce? Have you made sure the correct output bus is chosen. Some times I forget to change the output bus and get a blank file.

well so far in this project it's all electronic, all Kontakt and NI's Piano sample player thing.. so there's no actual recorded audio in the project.. though I've had this problem since I started with this current set up.. where I have used to 828, and had audio and all the rest of it.

I do select everything.. the render doesn't take too long.. I think I have something like.. 12 sampler instances.. each has some convolution reverb supplied by Kontakt or the Piano player thing.. and then there's an aux channel eVerb... I couldn't tell you off hand how long it takes.. but its clearly doing something.. my only point of reference is working on the G4, so this computer is so many light years beyond it that.. it's hard to really judge.. but it seems consistent with other things I do on this computer.. so I don't think that's the issue.. though a few times I've forgotten to select stuff..

I mean I have gone into the manuel and followed it point by point.. and its still not working.

I'm not using the 828 too much just cause it makes things a little simpler..

Not being a bounce-to-disk user, I can't say for sure, but doesn't bounce-to-disk require audio tracks - i.e. you have to render your VIs to audio before you can bounce, you can't bounce a VI.

Try converting a VI track to audio and then bounce that, and see what happens.

In theory, theory works in practice, but in practice, it doesn't

yeah, I believe you have to 'freeze' (audio menu) the soft synths, which will create new audio tracks of each one and then bounce to disk is possible.

Hmm, that might be it?

That sounds like a less then ideal work flow... you didn't have to do that in DP 4 anyway? But then what would also be strange is that in the past I wasn't able to bounce stuff that had recorded audio in it? But then perhaps I was just flaking out somewhere else?

Anyway, thanks.. I'll try this...

"freeze tracks" was a new feature in DP4 i think....but you've always had to convert software instruments to audio in digital performer.
there are a few different ways to do it. (all in the manual)
pro-tools handles software instruments differently and "bounce to disk" in PT will render automatically.
the DP way is far more flexible though as you can apply all the audio editing capabilities right there on the spot which i don't believe you can do in PT. plus you can save all your resources for DP by printing the tracks as audio and quitting the other software.

of course i meant "mic pre's", not "mice pre's" in my post above!

If DP6 ever comes out, you won't have to do this any longer.

If you really want to understand this fully, read pg. 186, 549-550, 895-905. Also read the pertinent "Virtual Instruments" pages; you'll find it in the Index of the DP5 User Guide.

Or search for "freeze" in the PDF.

Oh, wait a minute. Never mind.

Thanks guys

I've been using DP for ages, but as a secondary DAW.. so I still have a long way to go with it.. I'm coming from Cubase, Reason, and Ableton Live.. I appreciate the utility of being able to freeze tracks, but why you would need to prior to rendering out I don't understand.. I mean what if you're on a laptop with limited disk space? Or is there a point, at least in some instances, where you could have a fast computer but say a slow hard drive.. so that you could handle more software instruments then audio channels?

This computer has a TB of scary raid, plus the 8 cores, so.. I'm good to go ether way.. but being used to older systems with less drives / processor power / etc.. It's like my entire process is still very conservative when it comes to how I use resources.. so used to trying to get that last bit of tooth paste out of the tube... and now its like.. I still have no real use for power management..

I suppose its a bit like being used to other religions and not yet knowing DP well enough to appreciate it's way of going about these things, or its whys..

But yeah, must spend more time withe the manuel!
