828mk3 Firmware v1.0.5 Update Instructions
1. VERIFY YOU NEED THE v.1.05 FIRMWARE UPDATE
Power off the 828mk3, then power back on. The firmware version will flash quickly on the display (mine originally shows "v1.04").
2. DETERMINE YOUR CURRENT AUDIO DRIVER VERSION
Launch the "MOTU Audio Console" Application. Under the "General" tab, look at the bottom for text showing "driver: xxx" (mine originally showed "driver: 3.6.8.1132")
To get the 828mk3 v1.05 Firmware Updater to work, you MUST be running Driver: 3.6.8.1170"
3. DOWNLOAD the Motu Audio Driver v3.6.8.1170
This is where things are a little strange. The audio driver available at the MOTU download page "32-bit Firewire and USB 2 Audio, version 3.6.8.1, date 2008/03/10" is NOT the driver you need, since it is actually version 3.6.8.1132".
To get version 3.6.8.1170 (required for the v1.05 Firmware update) you must download the MOTU V3HD update:
http://www.v3hd.com/support/downloads.html
The V3HD download "MOTU_V3HD_PC_Installer.zip" contains EXTRA stuff you do not need. After you unzip this file, you need the following TWO FILES:
-- "SetupAudio.exe" dated 3/14/2008
-- "AudioInstaller.dat" dated 3/14/2008
[These two files are newer versions of the files that are on the MOTU FW/USB download page]
4. UNINSTALL THE CURRENT MOTU AUDIO DRIVER
-- Shut down your computer, then power off the MOTU 828mk3
-- Reboot computer, keeping 828mk3 powered off (so the audio driver is not being used)
-- Using Windows "Add/Remove Programs", remove "MOTU FireWire/USB2 Audio"
-- Reboot computer, keeping the 828mk3 powered off
** At this point, all of the MOTU audio software and drivers should be gone from your system **
5. INSTALL the MOTU AUDIO DRIVER v3.6.8.1170
-- Keeping the 828mk3 powered OFF, run the executable "SetupAudio.exe", dated 3/14/2008, to install the required driver. This installs the MOTU software and drivers
-- Power up the 828mk3. You should get four separate "Window Hardware Wizard -- New hardware found" sessions (MOTU Audio, MOTU GSIF, MOTU Audio MIDI, and MOTU Audio Wave). For each, allow Windows to "automatically search for drivers".
-- Test audio playback (anything)
-- Launch "MOTU Audio Console" and look at "General" Tab. You should see "driver:3.6.8.1170"
** At this point, your system should work like normal, except that you are now running the updated v3.6.8.1170 audio driver. **
6. DOWNLOAD and INSTALL the 828mk3 v1.05 FIRMWARE
-- When you launch the firmware updater ("MOTU Fx Updater 32.exe" in my case) a screen will appear stating "There are no devices in the update state"
-- Power off the 828mk3, then power up while holding the PAGE button (this puts the 828mk3 in "boot loader" state so it can accept firmware updates)
-- the Firmware installer should now see the 828mk3
-- A single Windows "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard -- MOTU Audio" screen will be displayed. Use the "search for installed software" option.
-- After the New Hardware Wizard finishes, the MOTU Update App screen will change to "Press Update Now...". Press the update button and do NOTHING until the firmware is completely installed. An "Update Complete" screen wil be displayed.
-- After the Firmware Updater software displays its "Update complete" screen, close the PC updater window.
-- Power cycle the 828mk3 (power off, then on)
-- On power up, verify the 828mk3 displays "v1.05" (which shows the new firmware version number)
-- Test software playback
** At this point, you should be all done **

Great contribution, thanks so much
Before I get into the update business, and since I saw others having trouble with it, I was wondering whether it is better / necessary to uninstall the previous version from the Control Panel before installing the new version?
The manual does not talk about this (unless I missed it) so what is standard MOTU practices for the Windows platform on this??

The manual (for all MOTU products) recommends you install the software and drivers BEFORE you physically connect them.pcournoyer wrote:Before I get into the update business, and since I saw others having trouble with it, I was wondering whether it is better / necessary to uninstall the previous version from the Control Panel before installing the new version?
I actually did uninstall the old driver. I updated my post with instructions on how to remove the old driver.
I see in another post that "lundbergj" stated on April 3rd that "MOTU just informed me that this (squeal) is a known issue that will be fixed in a future driver update".jmpatrick wrote:Uninstalled old drivers, manually uninstalled every reference to MOTU from the registry, followed instructions above to the letter.
Still have the squeal.
Given the 828mk3 v1.02 Firmware updater is dated April 11th, I would assume the "squeal" issue would NOT be part of the v1.05 firmware update.

Makes sense as it is standard upgrade practice. Just wanted to make sure.I actually did uninstall the old driver. I updated my post with instructions on how to remove the old driver.
I just got the unit and I will wait to upgrade until I am confident I will keep it...but so far so good...learning to like it better everyday.
Thanks again.
